Hi guys,
I'm new to this group (I've had my 82 JA for about 3 years though) so I'm not sure if you've covered this 8 times already. I'm in Perth.
My problem is that the buttons on either side of the guage cluster (to turn on headlights and hazard lights etc.) eventually became so brittle that they just fell apart. As a result I have tried installing my own switches but I can't seem to get the headlights to pop down because I don't really know what I'm doing. I don't want to pay an auto sparky $1000 to play around with it until he works it out. I have tried libraries and Mitsubishi but can't get hold of a wiring diagram, and if I did, it might just be a whole lot of goobledygook anyway.
Has anyone else had this problem, and if so can you please share with me what you did about it?
Cheers.

buying a set of 2nd hand switches is the go.. not the cheapest of things but beats paying an autop sparky and looks stock (as it is..)
I know sum1 who has some for sale in perth, pm me if interested.

my problem is that all the bits of plastic and stuff are long gone, all I've got is loose wires held together with electrical tape, and a few of them connected with switches from dick smith, to get the basic ability to drive at night and not much else. I'll try to get a pic and post it.

Try PMing the Chefman (StarionChef) I know he is selling off various bits so he may have a complete cluster for sale.
Might be worth getting the whole instrument cluster if the switches are as knackered as you say they are.
great

I'm pretty sure NachoMan has some spares... an entire switch assembly plus plenty of other bits. Where abouts in perth are you?
Steve.

Were the switch lights originally clear? I mean the bit the light shines through, cos mine are like a misty\cloudy colour!?

i find it shameful that both my cars are older than i am :D
i believe they were clear to begin with, as one side of mine are clear and the other side are cloudy.

Yeh they were... you will find that with any plastic it will go cloudy over time... sun and heat speeds up the process. Makes it hard to see the graphics under it, similar story with the trip and odometer.

Yeah, thought as much! Pulled the dash apart last week, but you can't remove the singular buttons! Anyway to re-clear them or replace with new?

You could probably get some plastic moulded to the right shape and fitted not tooooo difficult, but might be a pain if you wnated to do it yourself due to plastic going a bit cloudy when heat applied for the moulding.
other than that contact a local plastic store and ask them, they might be able to help. AND let me know when u find out cause i wanna get mine fixed too :D

You could try polishing them with a buffer... its usually on the surface that it goes cloudy... just dont heat it up too much.
worth a try...
