Hyundai twin cam head conversion-update
Hyundai twin cam head conversion-update
Hi All,
I've been reading this forum for awhile now and have decided to join
so G'day. I have just blown my Starion engine (read broken ring lands)
When i stripped the motor down i noticed the cam bearings in the head
has flogged out and filled my head with metal past. Anyway I'm thinking
of swapping the head to a Hyundai 2ltr twincam head (looks like VR 4 head)as there is a whole motor sitting at my local wreckers. I know they use the same head gasket as i compared Starion to Sonata at work. I know the VR 4 head swap is possible but has any one used the Sonata head? I am already running after market ems.
Cheers
Dave.

Boost it till it blows
here is one we prepared earlier.

the head and other engine parts where from a NA Galant. it is possible there where a few pieces which where fabricated, not everything bolts on.

Yeah,
I'm going to pic up the motor tomorrow. :D
This what I've got planned.
Wolf ECU (got it)
Twin cam Hyundai head (getting it tomorrow)
VR 4 pistons (got some lined up)
To4b/To3 Garret (got it)(specs if you want them)
External waste gate (Home fab job)
Probably a couple of months before the car is back on the road.
I'm hoping maybe the cranks might be the same as mine has seen
better days.

VR4 conversion
Just to add fuel to the fire, you need to use the oil pump/timning cover, the oil pump on a VR4 etc is bigger to accomadte the hydraulic lifters and 2nd cam journal, from my measurements the vr4 pump is 30-40% more flow. Also two water holes at the front of head to block need to be drilled.
30PSI,2.4L! Wolf 3D Ver 4. VR4 Head.
Thanks Starion VR4,
Thats the kind of info i am looking for. Hopefully having the complete motor should make things easier as I'll have both to compare.
Any other drilling or machining required?
I am thinking maybe i might take some digi pics of steps along the way
for others to look and see what this conversion takes.Might make a good
tech file.

Stripped the Hyundai engine tonight and dummied up the head
and timing cover on Staz block. All fits sweat. Cam belt on.Below is a list of early problems.
I have to drill two holes in front of block to allow coolant up to the head.
I have to use the water pump from the Hyundai donk (outlet faces back)
I have to use the Hyundai crank as the nose of the crank is longer to acc
omadate the wider timing gears. Looks like the crank will swap straight
over. It also feels lighter and has more balance marks on it.
Some pluss's i see already. The Hyundai head has huge intake ports
probably twice the size of the Staz head. The Hyundai main caps are
girdle type and swap straight onto the staz block.Good for high revs.
The Staz oil filter housing bolts straight onto the Hyundai timing cover.
If you want more info let me know as it seems to me early in the piece
that this is not a hard conversion. :D
