Pitman Arm removal tool

Post by Powerslave »

Hey guys , I'm 99.9% off gettin out this power steer gearbox , bit I can't get the pitman joint seperated. After hunting around brisbane today , only autobahn had one , and after spending $25 , finding out it's only suitable for a fck'n truck (it's HUGE). Does anyone know where to get a DECENT and more useful pitman tool ???

I'm gettin deserate....

You dont need a special tool, just a big socket and some will/man power ;)

Remove the pin off the smaller nut and hit the thread down to seperate the steering rack from the arm. The steering box should then be able to be manouvered out easy enough. Don't forget to remove the cover plate around the steering box inside the wheel arch.

is this the taper lock thingy?? i normaly get them off by putting a screwdriver in it, hold on a little pressure and smack the SIDE of the taper with a hammer. you are not trying to bash the thing to death here, the idea is to "shock" the crap out of it... OR buy a DECENT tool to do the job properly and DECENTLY tell anyone who tells u otherwise to "shock" themselves in the head with a hammer. :D
I figured out the meaning of life, and since then every day just gets worse.

You shouldn't hit the thread, as it is only Grade 3 ( little better than mild steel) you can burr or damage the thread, if you stuff this end of Drag link, it Can't be replaced, but i have a spare one if you suff it. 8)

You may find it easier to leave the pitman arm in place and just undo the tie rod - get a tie rod tool though - should only cost $25 or so.
