I put another head on my car(i bought of todd munkman),its been ported and polished, double valve springs,o-ringed,2mm copper head gasket($104)from ridgecrest, billet crow cam,new valves, new guides etc.I took it for a drive and i was only getting 8lbs of it(5500rpm),so i got up it and still 8lbs boost, but it was producing more than before as it was set to 13lbs boost(normally 15lbs),so after this long week-end, i will put up to 13lbs to see whats its like, then 15lbs, as i was impressed with 8lb of boost, i think the reason why i lost 5lbs of boost because of the copper head gasket. So having a modified head shows a lot of gain.

David,
I want to know more about the boost setting. Do you have the standard wastegate actuator? To confirm what you said you changed the head ONLY and with no other changes you got 5lb's less boost.

thanks,
Mark.

Why did you go with a 2mm gasket?

Hi,
getting back to the head gasket, when I had my copper gasket installed the builder did everything known to mankind to ensure that there was no water seepage. But you guessed it, the thing leaked water from both sides of the head. After a 1000ks I re-torqued the head , but made no difference. Now I dont know what you think of Bars leak. I got onto their web site and had a bit of a look at their claims. If it did half the stuff that they claim, it must be good. They even recon that almost half the car manufactures use Bars leaks in their brand new engines. Anyway to cut a long story short, I put a bottle of Bars leaks in the radiator, and to date , no leaks.

I'll give bars a good rap too, when changing fan belts a few weeks ago I left a radiator hoseclamp on the fan and started the motor, there was a nasty noise as the clamp was dragged around the radiator fins. Water started leaking out, so I slipped a bottle of bars into it and drove off to Qld. 3000ks later and all is fine.
I've also used it on a 351 a few years ago that had a leaking head gasket, worked fine for that leak too :)

I used a new sealant called silver seal, which was recommended my ridgecrest, suppose to be the best stuff to use,the head gasket thickness, well Todd Munkman had recommended the 2mm gasket to me.No leaks yet with the head gasket.

What does that BARS stuff do? Turn your coolant into a jelly type substance? *shudder*

Ridgecrest must have changed their recommendations recently as they normally recommend Three-Bond sealant. However, I don't like using paste-type sealants on head gaskets as an even spread is not easy to achieve.

You have to drain the coolant then add the bars, it gets in the cracks and sets solid. I got some on the top of the core just under the cap and its there to stay, gave it a good poke with a screw driver but it wont budge.
