Austarion Idle

Hi guys and gals.

On the way to work yesterday every time i stopped at lights, the idle was all over the place! It didn't stall but was rising and falling between about 400rpm and 1200rpm.

It is still doing it today so it looks like I'll have to do something about it and it's not one of those "freak only happened once then dissapeared" problems I am so used to. I swear sometimes it's like driving a different car every day!!!

Any ideas what it is and how to fix it? :?

cheers.

You have either a vacuum leak or a faulty air-flow meter.

I had the same problem too. check your TPS it might need ajust or you might have a fault ISC motor.

Try this first (info from Powerslave in another post):

"I have seen this before. Remove the boost sensor from the firewall , split it open and you will probably find that is has had water leaking through it , causing corrosion. Use some PCB solvent and a stiff bristle toothbrush to clean it up , then use some non setting sealant around the diaphragm to make it air tight. This is a common problem on all JA starions that used the non-sealed boost sensor. Good Luck. "

Your problem sounds identical to this one.

So we all agree to disagree hey LOL

Best method to determine any fault is by 'Process of elimination' where you check every possible cause until you find the culprit.

What's your boost guage doing when this happens?

The boost gauge is remaining constant. This might be a stupid question but what does TPS and ISC stand for? Doesn't appear to be any vac leaks, how would I check the air flow meter?
Cheers guys

TPS=Throttle Position Sensor (used to determine fully open, suddenly closed, or fully closed - info from this is used to control the ISC motor)
ISC=Idle Speed Controller

This be a problem i also suffer from (apparently i also suffer from phrasing my sentences like a pirate :x ). I've been on a fault finding mission for the last couple of days as i'm assuming this is also the source of it not starting sometimes. Truth is i don't think my staz has ever worked well so i don't know if my airflow meter tps, map sensor, are working properly at all!

I couldn't find an air leak on the hose between the air can and turbo or on the crossover pipe. I also checked whether there were leaks on the hose to the map sensor. I have noticed my inlet is really oily and grimy near the seals on top and bottom could i be getting a leak through there? my weird idle between 1.5 - 2 grand is starting to drive me nuts!

my idle jumps 100's of RPM at a time when set to the right idle (500rpm)

bear in mind this isnt a starion. but my cam does it.

maybe there is an ignition problem?

So how do I check/adjust the TPS and the ISC? :?

Oh, what should the idle rpm be? Until now, it has always been around 800-900rpm.

That sounds right.

Mine was 1500rpm when cold
800rpm when normal

sorry i must have confused people

my engine has carby, and its not original. and its mechanical its a weber. so it stop pre-ignition i must lower the idle to compensaite.

ill get a starion soon enough, for old cars they are just far too expensive at the moment for me.
