Igniter Problem?

I have had a persistent problem with my JB, when it gets hot the engine will sometimes cut out when it idles. It requires a 'wiggle' of the wires going into the igniter to enable a re-start. Also after the engine has been stopped for a while, the 'wiggle" is again required to re-start.
We have replaced all the wiring into and out of the igniter but the problem is still there and the igniter seems to get much hotter than the ambient engine bay temp.
The diagnostics reports that the ECU has not seen an ignition pulse (from the igniter) for three seconds.
I would like to just replace this part but have been told that it is obsolete and I need some electrical wizard to construct and program a replacement item.
Does anyone out there have any suggestions?

Merlin has done this exact thing. Replaced the ignitor with cheap ignition parts. He's is away for a week but send him a PM and Im sure he'll get back to you.
Otherwise contact Wantsom. Im pretty sure he has a JB ignitor which he'll sell you. He is also in Sydney.

Thats a very common problem for those ignitors, if you wanted to try going second hand (probably not a good idea), check out some magnas of the same era.

Thanks for all of the responses here and by mail.
I've found one locally (Greg Farmer).
I'll post again if this cures the problem.

Got the same problem with my JB stalling when hot and restarts fine after left for a while. Dumb question, is the igniter and ignition coil the same item?

No. The ignitor, in a JB, is the black plastic box next to the coil. In a JA it is a bigger metal gold box.

Checked the ignitor and yes it is faulty. Can't beleive that this little thing is the cause of my stalling problem. Spare ignitor anyone?

the conversion to a Bosch igniter is quite easy (now i know how!)
it uses the standard staz dizzy reluctor signal.
it does not do over boost retard etc (of course).
(the Jaycar igniter unit did NOT work!!!)
the signal trigger point is slightly different, so the timing has to be reset,
thus you need access to a timing light.
you need the igniter module from a VK Injected 6 cylinder Holden Commodore. the same unit is used on some Falcon six's, but i dont know which ones exactly. Cheffman may answer that one.
i will post connection details some time when i get home.
Dave.

Can someone confirm where the igniter box is located. Where is it mounted and what does it look like?

left hand side, beside the coil, on a standard car. rectangular metal box thingy. prone to failure, after 20 years hard work. like me.
Dave.

Merlin,
Thanks for your reply, on a JB the black box mounted on the left of the inition coil says "knock box". Is this the ignition control module or igniter on a JB?

Merlin,
Going by your way of Bosch Ignition Module. Much rather use new or alternative units rather second hand. Can post instructions to connect.
Cheers!

Merlin,
have you got a part number for the bosch igniter fro VK Commodore. I've been told that the VK ECU controls the ignition.
Thanks
