Replacement Walbro Fuel Pump - How to guide

Had a hesitation issue when the car hit boost and found that the fuel pump was rooted. (Topic here)

So with some help sourcing a suitable pump for the job, it was decided a Walbro 190 LPH would fit the bill. I also had to buy a couple of adaptors to make it work (an M10x1 to 8mm barb and a 1/2" to 3/8" inline barb adaptor) and a short length of 3/8" fuel line.

I bought all the bits fromVPWso these numbers are from their system.
Fuel pump - EFI-190-384
Male barb M10x1 to 8mm - PFE745-01
Inline barb adaptor 3/8 to 1/2 - PFE490-06-08
3/8 fuel line 0.5metre - PFE400-06B
I also bought a couple of hose clamps

The pump kit comes with a pump, electrical terminals, nuts and star washers, two 3/8" barbed fittings, rubber isolation sleeve and two mounting brackets.

Make sure you have all the metal spacers that sit inside the rubber grommets on the pump bracket (4 off) In my pics you can see that 2 of mine are not in place. Use a 10mm socket to get the pump bracket undone when removing it all from the car.

First step - Remove the old pump and it's bracket from the base bracket.
Keep the rubber mounts and nuts.

Flip the bracket over and undo the pump bracket from the base bracket.

Grab the two brackets that come with the new pump. Bend the flat part downwards and straighten the angled part slightly (I did this to keep the new pump inlet at about the same height as the original pump inlet)
The top bracket is already bent to show what needs to be done.

Using the rubber mounts salvaged from the original pump, screw them into the holes left from the old pump bracket. Use the nuts and spring washers you removed earlier.

Mount the new brackets for the new pump. (bugger me if Mitsubishi didn't have the foresight to make the holes line up for mounting this pump!!)

Screw the 3/8" barb into the inlet. Screw the M10x1 to 8mm barb into the pump outlet. Make sure you put the copper washer on both adaptors.

Put the stubby holder over the pump body. Slip the pump into the brackets and tighten it all in place. Adjust the brackets to make sure the pump is centred.

Cut the fuel line from the original pump setup. Cut close to the old metal connection.

Push the original fuel line on to the 8mm pump outlet and use a clamp to hold in place.
Cut a short piece of 3/8" fuel line (blue), attach and clamp to the fuel pump inlet.
Attach the 1/2" to 3/8" adaptor to 3/8" fuel line. The 1/2" end attaches to the fuel line from the fuel tank (black)

At this point I will mention I was going to run a filter before the fuel pump (as shown in the pic). But there is not enough space to do so when you install the pump in the car.....or at least I haven't figured out how to fit it yet.

Then I hooked up the wiring for the pump. The pump body is clearly marked + and -. I crimped the connectors supplied and soldered just for peace of mind. A couple of cable ties to hold it all in place.

You will need to chop the wiring from the original pump. The black wire with yellow trace is the +. Give yourself a bit of length so you can put some spade connectors on to connect to the new pump wiring.

And that's it. I haven't replaced the plastic cover that normally fits over the top of the fuel pump...cos I've lost it somewhere. And it makes installation harder if it's in place.
Install the pump back in the car. The original fuel line goes back into the same place it came from, use a 19mm and 14mm spanner to do it all back up.

Happy to help mate.

We should just note, the reason this pump was chosen as this Walbro pump is designed to not only push fuel (like a bosch etc) @ 190L p/h, but it will also suck fuel up the starions pick-up tube. Something that none of the bosch pumps etc are designed to do.

As always a good write up Alpos , And a very important point about the pump being able to lift the fuel 1320 . :)
