Small diffs, large diffs and 6 bolts diffs.

Right here want to clear this up once and for all.
If you have a small diff and want to convert to a large diff, exactly which parts do you need?
I know you obviously need the diff housing, center and torque tube, but what about the axles? Are the small and large diff axles the same?
Does it matter if you're using the 4 or 5 stud hubs?
I know converting to a 6 bolt setup is a different kettle of fish and you need the whole lot, hubs included.
Is there anyone that has actually done this or tried successfully or not to switch between the axles?

Just to clarify...
There are 2 types of large diffs....the 4 bolt(axle) and 6 bolt.
They use the same carrier/housing but different spline.
In your case, providing you have the 4 bolt large LSD centre then your existing axles and hubs will work with it. Only if you change your axles
to the slightly beefier 4 bolt axles found on the early 86/87 widies, or change your hubs to 5 stud then you will have matching issues.
So the key is what LSD centre you have??

Currently I have a small diff setup. I have bought a large center and in the midst of tracking down a large housing and torque tube.
However I have had conflicting advise as to whether or not I can use the axles from the small diff setup
I plan to redrill the rear hubs from 4 to 5 stud.

As I said, your existing set up will work with the large diff (4 bolt) irrespective of modifying/drilling hubs from the 4 stud set up.
What large LSD centre do you have? Can you confirm the spline count?
From the top of my head, I think it's 28teeth for 4 bolt and 32teeth 6 bolt??

It's definitely 4 bolt large center.
Well that's a weight off my mind! I have 4 axles sitting here :)
Now if Motocam can find a half different price to ship a large 4 bolt housing and torque tube I'll be away laughing :beer
