Intercooler questions

Post by panda »

I'm currently fitting a 450 x 300mm intercooler to my JB rally car. Is there a nominal distance it should be spaced away from the radiator. I was planning about a 20mm gap, but I was told it should be more like 50mm away to allow more heat to dissipate from the intercooler & letting more cooler air into the radiator. What are your thoughts.

I would have it as far away from the radiator as possible. If you can only have it 20mm away then so be it, but the further away the better your cooling will be.

I'd try to get it as close as possible. Theory being that the air can't escape in between the two cores, it will be forced through one and then the other. Or even a small duct on the rear of the cooler to direct air through the radiator?

You can see now why I asked the question, there are numerous theories as to what is best, & all have merit. For neatness, ease of mounting & effective operation, I'd prefer to mount it up close to the radiator, however time will tell if it runs hotter than normal.
