Stupid @#$#ing Starion

Post by hcca »

I have -issssues-.. Car starts fine, idles pretty ordinarily, tries to die when I hit the accelerator (actually stalls if you hit the accelerator hard). I have to drag the clutch to get the car to move without conking out. It has a lot of popping/banging from the exhaust when coasting.. generally pissing me off. Anyway, any ideas?

I think i'm about to bite the bullet and do something that I haven't done for over 5 years.. take it to a mechanic... the problem is, no one i've come across in Brisbane has any idea about Starions. :x

Unplug every connector you can get your hands on, pull them apart and fill them up with RP7. See how that goes.

Sounds like a bad vacuum line hook up, happend to my car a while back when i was changing the pipes to silicone i did the stupid thing and pulled a few off at once but paid no attention to where they went too, when i hooked it up wrong the car idled poorly and as soon as i touched the accelerator the car died and it would carry on before dying when i tried to move the car by letting the clutch out.

Anyways might not be your issue but sounds similar.

Cheers

Sounds like its running lean under load. Hitting the throttle quickly is similar to putting the car under load such as when moving it. Check for air leaks after the air flow meter. I'd check the TPS too as it might think you're constantly at zero throttle. I'm assuming you're using standard ECU.

I'm on the westside of Brisbane. I have talked to Brisbane Tuning and Turbo before, but it was about my 2JZ Starion :)

I tried to drive it last night and i'm starting to think it's maybe the alternator. As soon as I turned the headlights on, the engine died. There was no way I could keep the engine alive and headlights on. It's not the battery (Optima Marine 800CCA mega unstoppable beast). I remember someone warning me that leaking power steering fluid would kill the alternator, and that's definitely a possibility.

Even before I developed this problem though I still had some issues with moving the car from idle (although less so). At revs it's fine.

I didn't think the Starion had a TPS? Fixed air leak so i'm pretty sure it's not that.

sounds like an air flow meter or TPS problem, the computer dosen't recognise any air entering the engine so it wont add fuel, Maybe

my car ran like poo when the connector to the alternator broke off, i thought it was a top end problem, until one night i went for a drive and the lights were dim and the indicators were veeeerrrrrrryyyyyyyyy slllloooooooowwwwwwwwwww as were the wipers. Check the voltage at the terminals when the car is running, should be between 13.8 and 14.4 V if it is charging correctly.

I ever had the same problem

It turned out to be one of the fuel filters was full of crap

check your fuel filter and the filters in the TBI housing (those were blocked on my staz)

before i figured it out Í had replaced the in tank filter the fuel pump filter and the normal fuel filter as well.

Just take the hose of the TBI and see if the little filter is poluted.

I also took out the injectors and dropped some injector cleaner in em

After i put it all back together the problem was solved for me.. (atleast for day because it turned out my tank was full of crap)

Staz Problems

Yea, most of what is above is correct, as for low voltage, if it was so low to affect the injection, the starter motor wouln't engauge and crank, sounds more like a MAF or vacuun leak , i can check it you for you whan we change the power stering pump, and check charge etc, have MAF can change that to am at hamilton, you have my ph #. :beer

I've been meaning to look into this problem further, but am a bit short of time right now (girlfriend staying with me over the weekend). Starion VR4, yeah, still wanted to have a look at your timing belt setup to work out what the hell's wrong with mine, so will have to give you a call, although it may not be till next weekend.

It still could be an alternator problem - the battery as I mentioned is a beast and will easily start the car. The problem is when a load is applied (fans, lights etc), voltage drops kill the engine (maybe). I think this because when I bought my other Starion, it had a dying battery so it had a very similar problem - ran great until the thermos kicked in or turned the headlights on.

Thanks for the suggestions. Will try to check as much as I can. Might call the RACQ to see if I can get a free diagnosis :)

I had exactly the same prob, got the alternator recoed and a new battery :D runs kinda sweet, though i need to get that custom induction pipe working properly. :x When my staz has the throttle pressed it does the backfire thing ( same as yours), i had the old induction tube (stock one) the car when this problem was occuring. It was split near the turbo causing alot of un-metered air in ( i guess). Hence the backfire near the turbo. :o  :x Not good!
Fixing that the car ran better but still backfire's now and then :x got me stumped. It's got new plugs, leads, alternator, belts, battery, coil, radiator. Since the installation of the radiator alot more problems have arisen. :wtf: not happy jan, i know how your feeling.
