Diff and Gearbox Oil

Post by RiceThief »

Im going to change my gearbox and diff oil soon, is lightweight shockproof suitable for the starion as its stated that its not suitable for most synchro boxes. Also I was looking at 75w140 oil for the diff or is it too thick? I was going to go that weight instead of the recommended 75w90 for extra protection on the track.

mate the redline lightweight is the bomb.

and motul diff oil seem to prolong the life of LSDs under a bit of stress.

Yeah, I use the Motul diff oil too, I'm sure it's good stuff, but to be honest, almost anything will do in these things - I've tried a range of oils in gearboxes and diffs and I reckon 99.9% of the rubbish you hear on forums about certain oils being better than others is just that. Buy a half-decent brand with the correct viscosity and I strongly doubt you'll ever have an oil-related failure.

I've broken plenty of gearboxes, but never due to oil.

Motul 75/90, but the Motul bit is just a wank - I've used Nulon, Castrol and various others that all did the same job.

I've run Castrol all along and never had a problem. I agree with Lummy totally. Just change it frequently. I do mine after every 4-5 meetings.

I have been using redline for years and I believe the results speak for themselves.

You cant compare Redline, Neo, Mobil 1 etc to Brands such as castrol, motul etc. Redline is a Group 5 oil, where as castrol, Penrite etc is Group 3. They are made of higher base stocks, have higher flash points etc.

And with the Shockproof oils, because of the uniqueness of them, the API write special ratings for them.

^^^^ agreed.

lummy what power levels were you running with the different oils?? be nice to know what the actual limits are and blow this myth wide open.
i recommend motul because it works well in two very different diffs, the starion lsd and ford 9" with short gears and a pile of torque which are notriously noisy when built tight.

on a side note itd be nice to see 1/4 mile tickets instead of dyno readings in general to calculate grunt, dynos can be a bit ambitious. :D

I've been running 400HP for a couple of years with various different oils in gearboxes and diffs. Track driven only (circuit racing).

Yep, on-track only. Dedicated circuit car. It runs a 36mm restrictor on the turbo, hence the drop-off in power and boost, otherwise it would be a lot more fun!

So would the Redline shockproof light be the way to go for a 3.9 LSD then?
