Handbrake has no holding power

Hey all,
Atm my handbrake does not hold the car at all...I will post up some pictures of the cables inside the car that are connected to the handbrake. I would rather fix the problem myself instead of taking it to a garage and being charged $120 to do something that might only take me a day to do.
Just as a general idea tho, wat would cause the handbrake to completely stop functioning?

I have had the same probem, it has usually been that one of the cables is jammed up with crap and poked.
Have a look under the centre console, the connecting bar between the two cables should be relatievely straight - not on big skewed angle.
Othe option is that the bar beends tightening up - give it a try.

Yep this a sign that one of the cables is jammed, you can't fix it, had to get a new cable made, I tried everything squartting WD40 down it, hanging it upside down with oil running in2 it, soaking it in a tub of engine oil, but to no avail. Mitsubishi want $250 each cable ( thats if they can be bothered to try and get it) or have new ones made about $100-150
PM me if you want to know where,, be most cable places can do it, look under cables/control in yellow pages.

The cables can be tightened, its just a case of screwing the couplings in more. However if the bar connecting the two cables isnt straight then one of the cables is most likely broken or jammed. Also check the effectiveness of your rear brakes... check the pads etc. I would suspect it's just a loose cable though. Did it happen gradually or did it just suddenly not work any more?

well i just bought a new starion so i have no idea if it is a new cable or not and how suddenly it stuffed up. Just a point tho, seems as tho one cable must be broken or something cause the bar is at approx a 45 degree angle with the left side being more forward than the right.
I just realised *hits head* i can take the handbrake out of the other car, cause its handbrake works...DER!

I would say one of the cables (the left one) is broken or where it attaches to the brakes is broken. Try to find out where it is broken (it's obviously not the handle end if u can see both cables), if the cable's snapped u need a replacement. Good thing u have a spare!

I need new rear pads then my handbrake will work as i have adjusted it yet both cables are taught so i think it is just the pads
Cheers
