Got in my car this evening and turned on the wipers... nothing. In the past the wiper mechanism had come undone from the arm that moves them, and I figured this had happened again, but I couldn't hear the arm moving around, so it wasnt that. I tried turning them off, on again, didn't work, until I slightly moved the arm (towards the indicator position) and then they worked.

So my problem is, the wipers are only going if I move the indicator arm out of the standard position. Ideas?

a new wiper motor would be the obvious fix, not sure if u can get em reconditioned.....
sounds like something is not making contact? mayhaps wiring or a connection withing the motor that has come apart/worn down?

It has to be somewhere within the arm, the problem only happens when the arm is in the normal position, if I move it slightly towards one of the indicator positions it works happily.

How hard is it to get at the indicator switch thing that the arm connects to? Do I have to take the stuff around the steering wheel off? I hope not, it was a bitch to get back on last time... :(

You may find where the arm goes through the body (the bit that rotates) is stiff. Pull them out and get to it with RP7, spray, wobble, turn and free them up. The motor just may not have enough grunt to overcome the stiffness.....

I think Jrod is referring to the indicator stalk on the steering column. Sounds like a bad contact in there somewhere.

That said...... NFI.

Pull it apart and get to it with RP7, spray, wobble, turn and free it up. Look for flattened or worn contacts, bend them forward/back if you spot anything.

Had the same problem with the wifes car.
Check that the mount for the stalk is not broken, you will need to take the steering wheel and column housing off.
Aside from that as mentioned previously, check all the connections.
