no airflow meter mod tutorial

this was done on 1983 JA non-intercooled model

---will get a noticeable power increase running a free intake and no AF meter

---will also now hear your turbo sucking and breathing freely

---your engine will run bit richer than stock, but is good matched with the new intake/ front mount intercooler and exhuast

(all of above is taking into consideration you have a healthy and normal running starion)

** disconnect your AFM plug and remove your big ass airbox and intake pipe to the turbo, (including any stock oil catch cans/breathers, and valnas pipes, your sump breather pipe can just be put somewhere it will stay, valnas intake pipe can simply be blocked off.. or new intake pipe can be modded to suit.
** setup a nice intake with a free flowing pod airfilter on there.. u know u want too....
** disconnect your O2 sensor
** connect a simple on/off (4 port) switch to the WIRING on the top plug of the thermostat housing (two plugs, upper and lower, you want the top one,)
the idea is to disconnect this sensor on warmup, then back to normal when the engine is warm.
** make sure you run hi-octane fuel

now on cold starts, you'l notice after around 12 seconds, your computer will change to a cold start fuel map which will be WAY to rich and cause your engine
to loose a cylinder, (brap brap brap and idle v.low), flick the switch and your engine will return to normal idle with the choke.
after driving the car to a warm water temperature, flick the switch again.

Is this for real? Why does this work? Would a time/temp controlled relay for this too?

meh ,,,one of the first of its kind in terms of fuel injection and computer.
dont think this will work on any other engines (that i know of)
gota love the way they made stuff in the 80's..

but yes its very much so for real, let me know how it goes

you say it was done on a ja starion, yet you are in NZ

nz only got the gsr 1 , 11 , 11 etc then the nz new ex euro?

im picking you done this mod on a gsr 1 or gsr 11 since they where the only models in nz to have no intercoolers?

?

I'm led to believe that some GSR-3 models did not have an intercooler. I know this because I own one (and yes I'm in Australia).

there's still the MAP sensor and the TPS too. But I wouldn't recommend running without the AFM, it's there for a reason.

i don't know if i've done this by accident as i was replacing the thermostat and my intake the same day.. im running no afm and car boosts past 7psi now with a boost controller.. and runs a slight bit rich.. other then that its going swell for a car with such high mileage on it. everything looks the norm.. and its making 12psi at 4k now instead of 7psi at 4k like it used to.. amazing difference!!
