Dying or Dead?

Hi again, I might get a week of driving out of my starion if someone can help me, I had to jump start it the other day,

was running really rough (3 cylinders rough, backfiring, etc), let it idle for about 5 mins then came right, went to take it for a drive, but under power it had none, poping etc,

but then I managed to get it home, I turned it off and then about 5 seconds later it was dead, would that be a alternator or battery do you think or maybe something else???

Cheers

test alternator with a multimeter.
if not its battery.
guaranteed.

I changed battery over with aone out of another car, it winds over quicker but won't start, it pops and lets heaps of smoke out of the exhaust, could it be leads or a cap or something?

A case of checking leads, plugs, battery, alternator.

it was going ok the other day, then I changed the main ring in the eci te one that goes around the outside, and since then it's been crap, put new leads on it tonightm, didn't make an ounce of difference, takes ages to even get it to a point of some sort of idle for about 4-5 second then have to start it again, then if you rev it a bit it farts and carry's on then just shuts down. so got me beat.
