gearbox not selecting gear

hey guys the 5 speed behing my 4g63 (is a nonturbo gearbox but basically identical to the starion ones) is a real pain to select 2nd

it flat out refuses to go down from 3rd to 2nd and sometimes on the upshift, usually if your rough with it or give it a hiding it 1
it doeesnt grind or crunch just feels like its hitting a "rubber" wall
if im stoped i can pop it in reverse and then it will go into second easy as

i just thought it was synchros but after taking it get some work done on something else the guy suggested it may infact be the linkages and quite a simple fix, not requiring complete dissasemble of gbox

so what im wondering is anyone else had this problem? and what is it likely to be?

obviously i wont know untill i take the gearbox out if thats it but just curious as the rest of the gearbox is great no whines or clunks or anything

clutch not disengaging (hydraulics?) or worn synchro's. if its a selector problem it'd be most likely the same when the engine's off.
Fibreglass airdams $370, fibreglass front bumpers $260, reco drag links $165, alloy radiators $925 (unpolished), h/l switch rebuilds $125, all plus freight.

Had a similar problem with my gearbox getting into 3rd. Flushed it with meths on some axle stands while running it through the gears. New oil and now it runs fine. Try your luck.

Yes, check your clutch system, specifically the throw of the slave rod at the clutch fork.

It may need to be bled again.

And probably... the pedal rod needs to be adjusted at the master cylinder under the dash.

I've found there are also 2 different sizes of throw rods mitsubishi used. Might be a widebody narrow body thing, but eh, it's worth looking at if all else fails.

cheers for the replys guys

clutch is cable not hydraulic so all that stuff is thrown out
plus would have thought if it was a clutch problem then it would not be just 2nd gear specific?

Some synchros are more picky than others, requiring slightly more clutch throw vs another gear. Friend thought he had a busted sr20 trans, and drove around with crappy shifting for a year. He even took it to a trans specialist, and the guys said it was definitely the syncros... I told him it wasn't.

So he lived with having to ease it into second before being able to even think about getting first gear, really terrible at stop lights because even then you'd have to force it, no grinding just feels like it's hitting "the wall".

A year later, I decided I'd get cracking at figuring out what it is... clutch throw just needed adjustment... couple turns of the master clutch rod under the dash, drives like a dream now.

If it's not that, then its the syncros... or you're shifting at too high RPM's for the tranny.

ok so lets say its a clutch issue

how do i go about sorting it with my cable clutch rather than a hydraulic setup?
i have pulled the cable through the firewall as hard as possible and tightened up that rubber grommet with notches on it, is that what i meant to do?
i assume theres not really alot of adjusting i can do

it is also sometimes difficult to select through the gears when the car is turned off and stationary, does it in more than just second gear tho, and cant remember if it is the same "wall" im hitting so maybe selectors like you were saying redzone, ill double check twomorrow

Could be a stretched cable especially if you have an uprated pressure plate.
Starions are a disease, the only cure is poverty.

nah dont think it is that due to the fact its happened right from the start of putting this setup and gbox in
no problems when car had old engine gbox cltuch setup

the clutch is also been "uprated" by moving the pivot point rather than uprating the springs or sum bs so as not to stretch cables and give a heavy feel, anywas the pedal is light as anything so i dont think it has stretched

now i went down before and had a play with my gearstick :shock: with the car off it wont go into gear just sliding it through when i first got in without using the clutch but when using the clutch it easily slides into gear and after that will also slide in without clutch aswell

so not selectors?
