Smokin

Post by Project2501 »

Hi guys,

got my car back and all is fine, except she spews a LOT of smoke. I understand the rings are pretty shot in the engine (lots of breathing) but would this be the reason for my tailpipe smoke? Its blue smoke, and if left to idle for a while becomes a cloud.

Also doesnt go away when i give it some nor when i let it engine brake. When i give it some, i leave a lil cloud standing where i changed gears.

Im hoping to god its just the turbo (which doesnt spin at idle and sounds like a jet engine throttling up)..

cheers

how much oil is in the sump? if its over full then that may be your problem, car just burning oil. if not you might want to drop the sump and
put some thicker oil in (i use 25w60 for my old engine) and it will help counteract blowby caused by old rings.

theres some oil additive i saw called stop smoke which may help too, might just give the oil a bit more weight.

see how ya go.

Smoke

I would say Turbo compressor seal is shot, with a bit of valve guides worn too.

If it's breathing heavily...

Post by David »

If it's breathing hard, 2 likely possibilities.

1. Broken ring lands.
2. Pressure blowing oil past static seal in Turbo.

Do a compression check, you may have one cylinder with a broken ring.

I had a similar issue, except mine ONLY happened under vacuum with high oil pressure and temp, I was told turbo seals. To check for valve guide seals I was told to boost up a hill, and engine brake down the other side, then floor it.

If smoke appears its valve guides. I had no smoke. Sounds like you DO have smoke. So gonna put my money on the old valve guide seals.

Although if your turbo compressor seals were royally buggered, it'd smoke all the time anyway.

I guess an acceptable plan of action may be:
> Compression Test first (check for ring death)
> if that not giving answers, get a turbo rebuild kit and give it a go
> if still munted, then look at doing the valve seal guide thingies

i'd say the valve guides are easier and cheaper to do than a turbo rebuild... i'd go there second.

I reckon you have what i had...

bad ring(s) and/or busted ring seat

Same Symptoms, car still seemed to go alright but smoked worse than a bum with $10 bucks.

The car is off having a compression test and the turbo fixed/replaced/recoed.

How would one go about doing the stem seals?

The mechanic is of the opinion that the turbo is shot (after delivery to him, there was smoke even coming out of the turbine) and i tend to agree after i saw the smoke from the turbine.

THanks for the suggestions, will ask my mechanic to give the engine a once over.

Cheers
