EVO III engine found having an affair with a Starion gearbox. Note: This is a 7 bolt bottom end not a 6 bolt Starion block.

Did you just drill new holes in the gearbox?

What about the flywheel?

hmmmm. somehow i think those g clamps are gonna have trouble transmitting 206kw.

These fotos are from months ago. The gearbox is now dowled and is held in place with M10 caps screws ( No G clamps are needed ...lol . EVO 3 starter motor fits perfectly and uses EVO 3 flywheel.
Multipoint welded cage done. Power steering rack done and replaces clumsy steering box. Compression struts replace the standard tension struts. [/img]

He must have drilled and tapped some threads into the block to mount the RWD engine mounts, as the Evo3 block doesn't even have castings on the block for the RWD mounts unlike E39A VR-4 and other 6 bolt engines.

all the holes are already there and tapped. I have done absolutely nothing to the block. All the engine mounts of the Starion were used. Bolted straight on and engine drops in perfectly 1st time. Bulkhead fowls on the cam position sensor on the back of the cyclinder head, so I moved the bulkhead back 2.5 inches. The DNS manifold was modified, the flange that the turbo mounts to was carefully sliced of and rotated abit so that the turbo points inwards towards the gap between the gearbox bellhousing and the tunnel. It was originally pointing straight back to the bulkhead,
parallel with engine block / chassis rail.

All I can say is the VR4 blocks etc... must be different cos I definitely did nothing to the block to get it to work.

Cage/shell/steering rack/gearbox and seam welding have been done at MES in Bolton, Manchester, United Kingdom by John Darlington who has worked for various touring car firms in the UK.

Strange.. it has been widely speculated that the 7 bolt Evo blocks don't infact have the castings on the block for RWD mounts.. but I guess you've proved that wrong.

Is the whole engine sitting quite far back compared to original Starion block?

E39A VR-4 blocks are almost the same as Starion 6 bolt block, apart from being narrowblock and having slightly different sized water jackets, and a different crank cradle.

i can confirm EVO3 blocks have the same rwd type mount bosses on the block, in the same places, engine sits in same spot, its the EVO4 and later that have no bosses there. i put an EVO3 motor in evoJB's car.

and there is one other difference with the galant and starion type block, the upper balance shaft rearward bearing is fed oil from the oil gallery not up the middle of the shaft like a starion block. thats a trap for some twin cam converters.

also there are NO differences between the 6 bolt HG/HH galant naturally aspirated block and a VR4 block, other than the oil squirter bosses are drilled and tapped for the squirters. i have a starion block, galant N/A engine, and galant VR4 engine in pieces in my shed at the moment. also the twin cam heads are IDENTICAL, valve sizes and all.

i will be posting pics etc in the twin cam thread i'm working on at the moment....

yup you're right the E33A Galant 4G63 block is no different from the VR-4 block, other than the pistons, different camshafts and the oil pump housing (for oil cooler).

so what do you need to do with that balance shaft bearing when using a twin cam head on a starion block?

Engine sits in exactly the same place as the Starion block does. However the thermostat housing and cam position sensor fowl on the bulkhead. Decided to move the bulkhead back a few inches which will allow me to can the cam position sensor on an event if it plays up.

simply use the starion upper balance shaft, it all goes together the same.
