Wheel choice help

I have picked a style of wheel I like but not sure what size to go with 18"s not being legal on the JB but the 17's would be. Also the added cost of the 18's is a factor.

OPTION 1 - $1,000 (Legal)
Front Rims 17x7" with 215/40/17
Rear Rims (same as front)

OPTION 2 - $1,500 (NOT Legal)
Front Rims 18x8" with 225/40/18
Rear Rims 18x9.5" with 265/35/18

Also both are a +40 offset.
I was looking at getting 30mm spacers front and back. Any idea how well each of the options would fit under the guards etc..???

What would you guys do?

Not sure on NSW laws but in QLD as long as rolling diameter isnt increased by 15mm or decreased by more then 30mm you can have any size wheels you like, So the 225/40 R18 on the front of my JA are legal in QLD, i even have the info from the QLD transport site printed and sitting in glovebox incase the cops want to argue about it.

Plus 18s are sick :p

Neither.

If you bend it you will have no insurance if your spacers aren't engineered. And if they're 18's you won't even get a look in.

Can you get the 17's with a proper offset? You might have a chance then....

Yeah I'm not keen on the +40mm offset idea with some heavy 17s or 18s.

Try tracking down a set of sweet lightweight jap wheels which suit the era the car was made in, in a correct offset of around 0mm to +20mm. New wheels (especially chromes) just look too tacky on a Starion.

It's fairly hard to find a nice set of basket weaves. BBS used to do them but they are worth a fair mint now, and the simmons range would cost just as much.

meh simmons don't really do it for me, far too over-used on rotaries and the like. BBS yeah.. but more at home on a Euro. I'm talking SSRs, Rays eng Volks, Longchamp XR4s, Starsharks, Work wheels, Watanabes etc.

Anything ROH, Advanti, TSW etc are generally rubbish.

This is all just my own opinion of course :P

i agree with this. not to keen on the newschool style wheels on a starion.

Jdm deep dish wheel suit them the best. Of course there are exceptions

I prefer 17's. Tyres are MUCH cheaper, (I can buy a set of road legal 2nd handies for $30 a tyre), and you stand a better chance of clearing the guards.
Offset is a BIG consideration too. On my GSR-V, a set of 17x7.5's with a +3 offset and 235/45/17 tyres scrape the guards. Of course they don't anymore, but guard rolling was necessary!
Also if you plan on lowering the car at all, 18's will have to have smears of rubber paint instead of tyres to not scrape!

the 235/45/17's were they scraping on the front or back?

What was the clearance like for the FRONT? mm?
What was the clearance like for the REARS? mm?

Front. The rears would bottom out on BIG bumps, or if I had 2 people in the back.

Clearance? no idea, but bloody close! I had a panel beater widen the guards because of the clearance, or lack of :)

These are my mags, 17x8's with 0 offset. Sit perfectly on the guards with 235's on the back and 215's on the front. Came from JAS who got them from a pre AU falcom which have the perfect offset for starions.

yeah width and offset are sweet but the design and the balloon tyres not so much :P would maybe look a little better with 215/45 all round. I dunno, I just don't that particular 5 spoke design is flattering for the Starion

They look much better in person I guess.... they're not so balloony at the back just the shadow kinda giving that effect. But i'm sure basically anything with a 0 offset will be fine as long as they're not to wide :P

Ugly rims but they'll fit.

Have a look around for stuff to suit R31 skylines...the have the same offsets/PCD's. Also Supra stuff is 114.3, sometimes multifit rims come up, 4x114/5x114 20~0 offsets.
