evo/vr4 motor? how hard?

umm, basically i just wanna know whats involved?
motors seem to be pretty inexpensive so im guessing installation will be the dearest part...
anyone already done it?
wanna share your hard earned secrets?

its a pain in the ass and there must be at least 10 threads on it in the technical section ;) have a good read and then come back with more definate questions, but there are people working on articles to cover the whole conversion from start to finish.. :)

EVO motor=not sure, mounts etc are different on the block apparently
VR4 motor=yep but its designed for a smaller bellhousing, so gearbox wont bolt up
Two fixes:
> Use Starion block and build it with VR4 internals, head, intake etc etc
> Use VR4 engine and make a gearbox adaptor plate
You need a custom exhaust manifold, and a lot of patience. Things need to be kinda 'wedged' in to place.
But yeah read the other posts, and you'll hear most of the dramas on the way.

It can be done using the SOHC bottom end. This is the easiest way. Still a lot of work though, can't bolt the head on until you have changed to VR4 pistons.
Depends on what resources you have and dollars available. Things that are easy to some are hard to others.
However if you want big power it's the way to go.

ok, iv been thru the older posts and yeah, it looks like a bit of a bas*ard of a job...
so, how much power can reliably be extracted from the original motor? i was sorta hoping for 280-300 hp...

If you are talking about flywheel HP, then that is an attainable figure.

I think the current highest number is 211HP at the wheels (for a non full on engine). This is with a non radical MPI engine but with a big turbo, big intercooler pipes and intercooler. 170 HP at the wheels seems pretty common, that's what I got with a stock engine with MPI conversion, aftermarket ECU, 15-16 PSI boost, JD intercooler setup and 2.5" exhaust.

Plenty of people have made 150-160RWKW with MPI, ECU, turbo and cooler mods.

If you want that sort of power in ur starion i would recommend the upgrade to the dohc engine, i am pushing 200kw with a stock vr4 motor and aftermarket ecu (just bigger injectors). It seems hard but if you have the tools and knowledge its very doable.
