Cold start issues

Post by 87_starion »

Hello people,

I recently started driving my Starion again and as its
getting colder in the mighty Waikato (where the V8's were
in the weekend for you OZ fellas) I really need to sort out
my lack of cold start ability. I dont know much about how the
system works on a Starion but if someone could point me in the right direction of things to check or common faults I would be very thankful.

And before anyone says 'use the search function you sillly newbie', I did, its quicker just to ask.

Thank You

Does it just not start? Continuously cranks? If so, could be caused by leaky injectors or a tired ignition system.

I'd check the coolant temp sensor (The one that goes to the ECU with the 2 wire oval plug )
If it's shagged the the ECU wont be adding more fuel when cold which might be your problem getting it to run smooth when cold :D

It cranks and tries to fire but never quite succeeds.
Putting your foot on the accelerator on seems make it harder to start.
Eventually when it does start it will cough and splutter and struggle to run. Pumping the throttle at this stage will generally slowly get the revs up. To keep it running you have to hold the revs up for 30 seconds or so and slowly let it back down. It will feel like its going to cut out but it usually ups the idle just in time. If you try to drive it without letting it warm up for a few minutes it will stall as soon as it gets any load. My car has 3 temp sensors. The bottom one is for the temprature gauge? When I unplug it the gauge drops off, so I assume that one works. When I unplug the top one the fans come on, The middle sensor is a two pin unit. I replaced it about 1300miles ago when I rebuilt the motor. I measured the resistance of it at between 20 - 30 degress and got roughly 2.530K ohms. The car has always done this since I brought it 4 years ago. Hope that describes it a bit better.

Cheers

have you checked that your wax pellet is opperating correctly?

its a little plunger that puches your throttle butterfly open to allow the car to idle up when cold, uses engine coolant running into it by a little hose, as its heated it slowly brings the idle speed down.

I would be checking your coolant temp sensor resistance compared to factory resistant specs aswell.
