GK 1984

oh yeah if it`s from a wagon then it will be
the same as a g e,h,j,k because all the wagons
were built using G.E. sigma floor pans (narrow shell)
unless im wrong ("phat chance lol")

well well

Post by tri26t »

well how piss easy was that ?

Image
in the fisrt picture Ive drilled this plug (it is a piston) and pushes fluid
via the return gallery to the (steering box)pump, that Ive drilled out also.

Image

then I took this out of where you see the screw driver in next picture

Image

then there was the return gallory in the steering main body that I
have drilled out half way back, so the fluid only returns to the sector
shaft area and not all the way back to the (steering box) pump in
the main body. Too bloody easy With box out of car........1 hour

here goes in english

Post by tri26t »

where the 2 pump hoses go in the steering box is the (main shaft)
pull the main shaft and rack piston out 2"/3"and youll see the main shaft valve springs (6mm nut) throw them out (picture 2 last post) this will let
fluid go though the valve body both ways (left/right) then pull the shaft out all the way and look at the back of the rack piston, then you will see
the cap ?/nut ?/plug? (what ever wanna call it) drill it out so that the piston cant compress fliud back to the main shaft
then just to make sure there isnt pressure in the main shaft to valve housing, turn the gearbox housing up side down in a vice and
drill through the piston bore 8mm from the valve housing end
"thats through the inside of the bore and into the fluid return gallery
THEN THE FLUID WILL FALL INTO THE SECTOR SHAFT AREA, so if
there is any pressure for what ever reason in the system it will be
releaved with no feed back anywhere in the hydrolic system.
NO I dont want to say it again
Cheers:Phil.

basicly Phil has made it so there is no pressure built up in the steering box and the fluid moves easier within the box.

Then u just piss off the pump and resevour.

If your pump or belt dies, the steering is pretty heavy, heavier than manual steering.

So your saying that's because of the pressure inside the steering box?

So do what you say, and the steering will get lighter? Correct?

yes the steering is very light, Ive read this steering conversion
topic and others heaps of times and cant work out why you
would put the sig/scorp box in, as you have to pull the staz box
you might as well do surgery on staz box and be done with it.

there are zero (read no) problems that I can see by doing this,
I know ppl have been changing boxes because of leaks and I
think thats ok but ive noticed with most of the power steering
boxes, that when you take the pressure of the pump away
from the steering box, the leaking stops

so Ive used diff oil in my steering just so if it leaks I`ll be able to
do something about it b4 it gets too bad (if it does that is)
the steering on my JA feels like it was made manual steering
my investigation showed :sigma 2 bolt steering box 18.2:1
. :sigma 3 bolt steering box 17.1:1
:starion 3 bolt steering box 16.0:1
and that if im right makes the starion the "quickest"
steering lock to lock of all of them but is still so easy to turn.
Cheers:Phil.

leaking box is my only reason for replacement. rest of my PS system is fine, only box leaks, and in turn stuffs it up.

another Sigma/Starion PS box from wrecker is $220... mine has alot of freeplay also :(
