So is it true the Mazda B2600 has a 2.6 Mitsubishi block? This is something I have not verified. Unless it is a US market only thing?

rallystarion, i've got a couple of mates over here in NZ that rally an EX2000 (replica) lancer who are in the middle of building a custom box for rallying. the turbo lancer boxes are the same as the starion boxes except shifter position so what he's doing should work fine for you too. they're running about 250 rwhp and they've chewed up their last RX3 dogleg box (don't ask why they used one of those, i haven't got a clue, i think it had the ratios they wanted). if you're interested then contact rallitubby (brett) through the ex2000 section of the lancerregister (www.lancerregister.com), he should be able to give you the info on what he's doing. here's the post that relates:

http://www.lancerregister.com/showthrea ... adid=89828

as for the L300 box i don't know, i've been told (dirty old internet rumour) that the early L200's (up to about 85) gearbox's ran the same internals as the starion boxes anyway and i'd be surprised if the L200 and L300 RWD boxes were any different. there's a bit of info in the above post on ratio's too.

cheers
Matt

Would the b2600 bellhousing fit the 2ltr starion block?? Or would it be easyer to use a 4spd RWD sigma bellhousing, with an adptor plate. to bolt to a VR4 block?

Im building a 400-450 hp twin cam engine (havent decided what block Im going to use), would the starion gear box be OK?

Jason,

Yes, the 2600belhousing does fit the 2.0L Starion engine. I'm driving with a 86 2.0L Starion shortblock with a 2.6L Starion gearbox.
FYI i've got a DOHC engine in my car (1G Eclipse). My power output is approx 400HP (Flywheel) it seems that the gearbox is pretty strong, it is still running well.

Martijn.

MK triton 2.4 16v 2wd gearbox looks identical 2 a starion 4g63 sohc box, has same clutch set up as a starion, same shifter housing bolt pattern, havn`t checked which bellhousing pattern (narrow or wide) they use though. Scorpion 2lt alloy case 5spd`s fit the vr4/evo twin cam blocks, i assume a 2.6 scorpion alloy 5spd would fit a 2lt sohc starion block but the clutch setup is cable (pull) on both scorpion boxes. i`m setting up a scorpion box on nick`s evo3 powered jb early in the new year so i might even look at making a kit to mount the clutch slave on the scorpion box..... there was a gh sigma at auto salon brisbane that had 322hp at the wheels wit a bombed vr4 motor running a 2lt scorpion box and the owner had not had ONE prob with it and i do know the gears are actually narrower than a starion box

Sorry for digging up a dated post BUT I was just catching up on your christmas shinanigans and I read this.

Let me get this straight.

Mazda B2600 bellhousing bolts up to the Starion 4G63 block?
and an RX7 Series 4/5 gearbox bolts up to the other end?

Whats the catch? Obviously custom mounts and driveshaft. But would the shifter line up? Clutch? So many questions :?

and I want a gearbox with a slicker shift-change.

Drove my girlfriend's MX5, and wow, I'd love to modernise the Starion a little more if it is possible without too much trouble. If it involves custom bellhousings - then I'll pass. Just another item for the to-do list :?

Yeah, I second that.

I want a good shift change. Ive driven a S4 RX7 and it was realy good to shift.

Has anyone done the RX7-B2600-starion convertion??????????????
If so Im sure we would love to hear about it.

Did some digging, and yes indeed the early B2600 was powered by a G54B (Starion 2.6 motor minus a turbo or fuel injection).

Quotes from Wikipedia:

"B2600
1986-1988 - 2.6 L (2555 cc) G54B I4, 102 hp
1988-1991 - 2.6 L (2606 cc) G6 I4, 121 hp "

"The 2.6 L Mitsubishi-powered B2600 was introduced in 1986"

Will DEFINITELY be looking into this. Have already had probs with starion gearboxes synchro`s getting lazy into third, this`ll be a big problem 4 my drift car as u need good 2nd to 3rd shifting at high revs.. RX7 series 4/5 boxes aren`t indestructible, but they`re a good value for money upgrade and they`re reasonably plentiful. The mazda bellhousing sounds feasible, will check and report block boltpattern (narrow or wide) and gearbox boltpattern. As far as the clutch goes, they use a hydraulic setup so easy as there, use a starion pressure plate to match the flywheel and a clutch friction plate to suit the mazda input shaft. Spigot bearing to suit mazda obviously 2. Driveshaft is obviously custom but thats neither expensive or difficult. There are a number of aftermarket shifter housings already available for these boxes as everyone puts em in rx3`s rx2`s etc so thats no stress either. Tim Kreis (bushpig cortina) works over the road from me so i`ll grab one of his blown s4 gearboxes off him n start checkin this out. KEEP YA POSTED!!

The pattern is the wide 4G54 pattern. just remember that the early B2600 uses the mitsi motor and the B2600i uses a mazda 12valve motor. You need the bellhousing off the earlier. Keep us all posted.
