I've been looking for a fix for my car ignition circuit problems when I found this...

If the switch gets stuck down the windows will stop working for a while (one of the relays next to the battery does that) but in the meantime the wire can get really hot. It's the blue one between the switches.
If you trace this wire from the switches you may notice it's not in the best shape; if the outer sheath is coming away from the wire it's been cooked.
The window switch wiring connector might have gotten cooked (pull the connectors apart - if you can!) and fix that. The other place to check is the relay/fusable link box next to the battery. The main plug from the box to the rest of the loom could be fused together there as well...

Might be a bit late, but I hope it helps...

The thing in blue is your relay, if your demister works swap its relay with the power window one. If your demister still works your relay is fine.

Sounds like it's working anyway as you were getting power to the windows.

That's a fusable link in red champ. It'll either work or it won't and it sounds like it's burned out. Take it out and go to an autoelec and get them to make another one for you. Get a few, they'll only charge you a couple of bucks each.

Take the switches out and blast them with carb cleaner! The grease in there actually becomes solid and non-conductive after repeated rubbing and 20+ years of drying out. I haven't had a car before that I needed to clean EVERY connector.

+1. My window would go down but not up. The connectors were all greasy inside the doors. Had to put 12v across it just to close it. Lucky I got it closed as i have to drive to Unanderra tomorrow morning at 6am. Would have frozen!

Whoa, bringing back those old posts from the dead :).

The passenger window switch in my car stuffed out just after i bought it. Its the early type, in the centre console. Took it apart and sanded up the contacts, regreased, and its a good-un.

Been there too...first thing is check your fusible link beside the battery.
wiggle it around, often it becomes a bad connection there.

Often you'll get a short on the blue wire somewhere between the switch harness and the link. If the switches stay down too long on a JA/GSRII/III it heats up the blue wire. Check the switch harness hasn't gotten too hot and buggered the connectors.
