Hesitation before boost

More testing. Ran the car, warmed it up, fuel pump was making it's occasional buzzing noise. Hooked up multimeter to the pump leads, constant 12.5 V across the terminals when revving from idle to about 3k (kid was on the accelarator pedal so I didn't want him to press too hard....cos kids have no mechanical sympathy!)

So...pulled the fuel pump, hooked it up to 12V and shot fuel all over the grass. Runs beautifully for the couple of seconds I had it on.

I'm in the process of replacing the fuel filters. The one in the engine bay.... Ryco Z344 (343, 342 etc) or Ryco MF4 (universal fit)

Also going to replace the one I put in before the fuel pump, Wesfil/Cooper WCF-76. It has 12mm inlet and outlet.

Just waiting for the auto parts shop to get the bloody things in!

Some pumps have enough power to keep pressure, until the pressure needs to rise for boost, and they drop. A fuel pressure test will tell exactly what your fuel system's condition is.

Yes, I plan to put all the new filters in and try again to see if it will fail under load. I'm just baulking a bit at the price tag for a new pump. I'd rather exhaust all other (read cheaper) elements first.

Dunno....but it looked pretty good after I cleaned it out a while ago. I put the filter in before the fuel pump, just as extra insurance against crap getting into the pump. It doesn't look too bad to me, not unexpected, you can never get all the crap out after you clean the tank.

In the US, we often upgrade to the walbro 255lph pumps as they're only $120 or so and support more power.

Not sure if they're widely used there, but here's a link:

Stock replacement pump is rated at 170 lph @ 3 bar. I'm unsure what the actual specifications are for a stock pump.

Replacement pumps here are a tad more expensive than that. An 044 from auto place is about $450 :shock:

And there's the concern about how many ebay places sell genuine Walbro/Bosch pumps (I searched the part number in the ad you linked, Summit has thispump...rated less...there's so many different things out there! )

My only concern with a high flow pump like an 044 is how the extra flow will be dealt with. Is it an issue to pump 255lph when you need way less than that?

You'd need to pop on a fuel pressure gauge to make sure it's not over running the pressure regulator.

Stay away from any suspiciously cheap bosch pumps... We've had heaps of fake ones come through work and they are universally shit.

Yeah, the fakes suck... when I first heard of fake fuel pumps I thought no way.

I've installed two walbro 255lph pumps on two different stock fuel systems (including stock FPR) and haven't had any issues, at least 25k(miles) on each.

Those prices are pretty high!! I can get a (real) bosch 044 for $183, and walbro 255's for around $110. If any of you guys need me to ship em over, let me know it's about $60 6-10 days with tracking (unless you feel brave and want it shipped in a padded envelope for $24 lol). I've done quite a bit of shipping to the land down under. Looks like SummitRacing can ship to you cheaper than I can though. SummitRacing will only carry legit items, BTW.

Nice Aaron! I remember some years ago buying a Goss replacement unit from Burson for like $230, turned out I had to return it too 'cause the bloody thing didn't work!
