i think the gap between a good tune and a bad tune would be larger than the gap between the different brands of ecus, almost all will make the same peak power, its under the graph where it changes allot.

well, no... the ecu is only as good as the engineers that design it. The actual job of tuning the ecu is only as good as the tuners ability to tune an engine with what he has to work with. There is a big difference there.
ya friggin smartass! he sayin a long time wolf tuner vs me tuning a motec would result in the wolf staz running better. well, youd think so...

But deeks, you don't do it for a living!

It's a bit hard to tune around ecu hardware limitations and not expect to loose power. Makes it even worse if you can't trust the ecu.

A nice example of power differences, some people I know in melbourne recently had a toyota 2zz engine on a dyno which was fitted and tuned with a unichip, standard engine, nothing touched, unplugged the unichip and fitted an M400, got nearly 10% more power out of it. Same engine, same dyno, same day. Not all ecu's are created equal.

i thought unichip was a piggyback ecu that works off the original maps?

Yep, fully programmable. They work okay for what they are. Better than a few of those ecu's in the list actually. In the case of the 2zz with variable cam timing and lift the unichip has control over that via the toyota ecu. If it were any of those other ecu's in that list I don't think they have the ability to control the toyota vvtl-i system the same way the std toyota ecu or motec can, accurately.

Obviously this is useless info for a Starion, but I'm just trying to point out that it's not just the tuner that makes the difference. You'd just generally be better off with a better ecu.

yeah but tyhe tuner does make a difference if your out in whoop whoop, the local mechanic is quite good at only 1 ecu and theres no other around for ages, it makes for a bit of a strong case for that ecu.
