Dead JA

Post by JD_Stazza_Brendan »

Bit of a long shot but im grasping at straws.

On way home car suddenly started shuddering, like a plug lead had come off. Couldnt pull over on the road i was on and had to stop at a set of lights where the car died and would not start again.

I pushed the car off the road and started looking for obvious problems.
My JA has Sonata MPI with a LINK V4 computer
*All plug leads are connected right
*Fuel pump still works (can hear pumping away in back like it always has)
*Changed plugs
*All 4 plugs have good spark
*All earths checked
*Wire connections checked including injectors,ecu
*Timing checked (all lines up perfectly)
*Can smell fuel after trying to start it
*Motor turns over fine just wont start
*Car was running perfect before this
*Battery connection good
*Battery voltage great
*Tacho bounces when trying to start car
*Vacuum lines fine, even one going to MAP sensor on ECU
*Havnt done compression test

Any ideas??

Have you had the cover off and had a look at the whole belt?
Does it try and fire or does it just turn over and over?
What were you doing before it started playing up?

If it just plain doesn't start it has to be fuel (which you said is fine), spark (which you also said is fine) or compression. Can you check compression of each cylinder?

Had a similar problem donkeys years ago & it turned out to be a blocked fuel filter .
Suggest you disconnect line before rail & see if the flow is a stream or spits & farts like mine did
Hope this helps
I've had mine since 03 07 92

How would i go abouts finding the Ignitor..Is there a way i can trace it back from the Coil?
Could it be built into ECU?

The fuel filter is a clear one that sits in the engine bay, Looks like its full of fuel. Ill swap it over anyway.

when driving along did you loose all power and notice cars speed dropping and running like 2.5 / 4 cylinders stalled when u'd stopped?

You might have had the head gasket let go between 2 cylinders, check all 4 for compression and you may find that 2 ajoining cylinders have little to no compression.

I had this happen a few years back.
Powerplant: Chipped stock ECU, 2044cc, 8.5:1, head intake enlarged and polished, exhaust manifold enlarged,
Balance-shafts eliminated, Intercooled, TC06 @ 10psi, 2.5" high flow exhaust system and dump pipe.

Thats the other thing ive got to check. Ive got a compression gauge at home somewhere just got to find it.

But what you described is what happend. Felt like it was on 3 or less cylinders. then when i had to stop at the lights it died.

If i took off the rocker cover i should see water in the head shouldnt I, or is this not always the case?

Umm, in a word, no! Oil yes, water no...
Reduce fuel costs by 15-20% & cut emissions by 1/3rd...
Increase engine performance & prolong engine life...
How?

Sorry, meant to say, if the headgasket was stuffed would i see some water in the head..

Or can the headgasket be stuffed and not show signs of water in the head

I think if the head gasket is stuffed, you don't necessarily see water in the engine. That is mainly from cracked heads. But I have not had a gasket gone on me before, so I wouldn't know 100%. It is probably possible.

Hey Brendan, This has happened with this car b4 and it was the
igniter

Image

just in front of the left/front strut there is this black box
and a long time ago that igniter sh-t itself and it may
have done it again, check that the WHITE wire going to the
igniter isnt broken (AT THE IGNITER)
When I blow my last head gasket it was between cylinders
and NO there wont be Water or oil swapping going on.

Cheers:Phil.
