Alternator outputing just under 20V

Hey guys, just swaped over my altenator for a working one and i checked the voltage on it and its getting just under 20V (19.something) is this ok?

no it should chargng about 14.4 volts and the battery should be 12.6 volts
wth the motor not running,sounds like the regulator not working properly,it should cut out at 14.4v on a average.

Regulator is goen in alternator. Happend in my JD. Make sure you get a good quality regulator fitted. Usually the diodes will be fried as well. or close to it.

Mine did this the other day, 18.8v. Regulator died in the Alternator. Nearly took out my fuel pump. I lost low beams and my electrics were going mad! Could have done some serious damage to the battery!

Replace it ASAP! I wouldn't even turn it on personally! :x

so i have to replace the whole altinator? or just the regulator?

Remove the alternator and take it into any decent Auto Electrician and tell them the alternator is overcharging. He will probably say the regulator is stuffed. Get him to fix that and check over the alternator. Then refit it and off you go.

well ive already got a replacement off my no.1 man flav. so i will be installing that tommorow :D

Would be good to hang onto the stuffed one just in case in the future the one youve going to put in decides to go....

Also check for power steering fluid leaks around the alternator. Especially from the pump and resevoir above it. Main killer of alternators in Starions
