Fuel Pump - part number/s?

Need to look at getting a new fuel pump to take it out of the equation of my badly running engine. What make/model fits up into the standard position - either standard or hipo.

Thanks for the pointer. Looking to buy brand new though as you never know when an older fuel pump that's 20 odd years old is going to fail (not implying that those ones are dodgy either).

very true, why dont you consider a upgrade to maybe a VL fuel pump?
that way later down the track you have no worries

Is the VL pump a direct bolt in option or is the modifications required to fit it up?

the VL turbo pump has barb fittings on the inlet
and (unfortunately) on the outlet.
so the banjo fitting has to be cut off and a hose clamp used instead.
otherwise, an easy change over.
on both our starions, i enlarged the pump access hatch in the boot floor.
this mod makes it much easier to service the pump.
you just need to make a new metal hatch cover.
the Bosch motorsport pump, which gets a lot of magazine space in Zoom etc,
would be a better pump, especialy for twincam engined hotties.
it has barb inlet and some flavour threaded outlet (cant remember details).
its expensive though. a new VL turbo pump should cost less than $200.

Thanks Merlin. Appreciate the info, only thing is for the time being, this is just a runabout while I build up another car so I'm thinking although I'd like to get a larger a pump, it really isn't necessary.

I suppose it's easy enough to just take the standard pump out and then go match it at a Repco/Coventry's or something?

Replacement fuel pump for Starions

I have a few months ago replaced my Jb fuel pump to a Bosch fuel pump. I got it from Petro-Ject east of Melbourne. The part number is 10003 and it is a inline fuel pump good for upto 150kw ATW. This is a direct replacement unit.

I tried to get VL pump but I was advised by PJ that the VL pump is gravity fed so you will need to custom fit this lower than tank height "under chassis" and customise fuel lines to feed fuel into it. "VAIN PUMP"

Starion pump needs to "SUCK" fuel from above the tank from it's factory position.

from memory the price is under $300 I think it was $270.

I bought a Bosch 910 pump for $195 from ASV in Villawood, Sydney. Will more than handle the fuel flow for a modded Starion.

Can you confirm that the 910 was a straight fit into the original location? Want as little hassle/fabrication as possible.

That Bosch 10003 pump sounds like it could be the go, but jeez it's expensive! $270 will pay for a Bosch Motorsport 040.

The Bosche 910 is what mine has in it, it wont fit straight in and it didnt suck from the tank either, but may do for other people.

I have a Starion pump at home you can have it, it worked fine 6 months ago.

I have a Bosch 070 coming over tonight which should be fine for the application - if in fact it is that. Have borrowed a fuel pressure gauge to see what it's pulling.

Any ideas as to what normal fuel pressure should be?

fuel pressure is primarily the job of the regulator.
on a staz, the pressure at idle should be about 36psi.
the pressure will increase as boost comes on,
which compensates for the pressure difference across the injector.
expect to see some pulsing on the gauge.
the pressure will show some fluctuations as the injectors fire.
some later model efi engines came fitted with a pulse damper.
it acts to reduce these variations in pressure on the fuel rail.
it looks like a regulator, but has no hose to the manifold.

Well I finally got it running. Tested the injectors before bolting the injection assembly back in by disconnecting the coil and turning the engine over. Both were firing fine. Sprayed all the spark plugs and suspect that this was where the problem was lying. A couple looked quite fouled (even though they were new last Saturday), but due to the crap that falls into the intake (ie. coolant) when you crack the two long bolts, I believe this was the cause of the fouling.

A good thing is that I now know that if the fuel pump does eventually go, I can replace with a Bosch 070 pump.

I have had a VL turbo pump in my car for about 8 years. It works in the same position as the factory one no problem. Perhaps a fraction louder but you still can't hear it inside so it's fine.
