Ahhhh Can hardly rev, fuel pump?

Ok heres the story, was driving normal for about an hour went to a friends house, stopped then left and was driving to highpoint and went to plant the foot around a corner, car hit 4000rpm then backfired and revs died out, wouldnt go anymore and blew a bit of smoke (black) got worried and tested the car while driving on, cut out at 4000 again whether boosting or not. parked at hp for about an hour or two and then started her up again, driving home proved worse as the car started getting worse, cutting out and dropping rpms at lower intervals eg: 4000 then 3500 then 2900 or so in the next 20 mins it took getting home. parked at home, while stopped decided to rev her to see wtf was going on got to 3500 then cut out and blew a meter long flame out the exhaust accompanied by the loudest back fire ever. got scared and switched it off. shes still sitting there and wont be started or moved untill i know wtf is going on. any ideas guys?
im going to mechanics on monday but i need info or suggestion or even past experinces to solve this asap.

Is your boost gauge misbehaving during these episodes? i.e. fluttering gauge needle, etc?

Ignition system failing? Perhaps a coil on it's way out?

taking her to the mechanics 2moro but still no idea as to what it is, i had a look around the map sensor vac line but didnt find any cracks flav, also the boost guage is normal while this happens only the rev meter goes spastic. all help appreciated people, ill find out the problem 2moro and keep all updated!!

sounds like an ignition problem.. black smoke is usually an indicator of richness or fuel smoke which prob indicates all fuel is not being ignited, rather than a lack of fuel issue such as a dodgy fuel pump.

When my car was tuned too rich it would blow a huge flame on the 1=2 change, looked impressive at night in the mirror :)

well after 3 or so hours changing this and that and ending up with new leads plugs and various other normal maitenance crap i gave up and took it to the mechanic, in a whole 2 minutes he sussed out that it was a broken wire on a plug that had to do with the dizzy. soldered and retaped it and problem solved!! just goes to show that sometimes age affects things that we dont really suspect and big problems are really just little ones! Said my thanks and lit em up outside the shop to return home.
