I take my hat off to you for attempting to fit the velnas , it's a pain in the arse to get going but it can be done. If you want to use the analogue dash , you will need either a speedo cable from a staz that has a velnas fitted , or you will need to make a hall effect device that has 4 magnets (4 pulses per rotation of the speedo cable). Alternativeley , if you can get your hands on a digital dash , it uses an optical sensor that sends 20 pulses per rotation for the speed display. All you need then is about $10 worth of parts and build a circuit that divides the pulses by 5 (so you end up with 4 pulses per rotation). This is the method I chose because the speedo cables with the sensors are so rare. You might want to look into a kit from dick smith or jaycar ('knight rider led chaser kit') , this kit is actually a frequency divider , and is very versatile. If you need any more info on this , just ask me , iv'e already smashed my head into the wall over the velnas and fortunately , did not let it win ...

Basically , there are 3 signals required by the VELNAS.

Speed sensor
#2 injector pulse
Headlight signal (for dimming of the display)

I will have to dig up my notes on the pinouts etc. Note that the velnas will only work on JA and early JB series as these used alternate firing injectors. If you hook it up to later series , your fuel consumption readings will be a mile out of whack.

Stay tuned and I'll post once I dig up the info you need.

Dug this thread up from the grave.

Just wanted to know for sure. I have a working VELNAS setup. Will replacing the dashboard with a working 240KPH unit, allow the VELNAS to keep running?

Its not going to crap itself when I change speedos, right?

(Oh and replacing a 180 -> 240 speedo, will the speed still read correctly?)

Just made an interesting discovery last weekend regarding this issue. If you have a JA speedo unit , there is no pulse generator (reed switch). The JB speedo does. Wish I knew that before I glued 4 magnets onto the spinning drum in my JA speedo. I will be changing it over this week.

So I need a JB 240 speedo or glue the magnets?

Yep , but gluing magnets is ok for distance measurements (velnas) , but no good for cruise control , or rev/speed meters. On my apexi , my digital speed fluctuates by about 3kph quite madly , and that's because the magnets are NOT PERFECTLY ALIGNED. The JB speedo will fix this problem , though.

Ah crap

Is there anyway I can remove the bits from the VELNAS digital speedo, to make the 240 VELNAS compatible?

Technically you could , you need to swap the rotating drum , but you risk destroying the speedo. Remove the 240 unit , take a pic and post it , I'll check it out and see if it'll work if you like.

Cheers PowerSlave, Ill take a pic tomorrow for you to check out
I want to replace the digital with a 240KPH + white faced dial combo that I have here.

VELNAS is a rare Mitsubishi trip computer for the Starion

Vehcile ELectronic NAvigation System

Has features like L of fuel used, average speed, distance per L of fuel etc plus racing features like the lap timer etc, and also has an alarm and controls the clock.

It uses the a digital display where the normal Starion clock sits, and is a 1 DIN unit that sits below the car stereo.
