And another question - oil ring

Post by Bazza »

I am leaking oil from around the crankshaft pulleys. I am guessing it will be the oil ring. Can it be replaced without taking the the whole bottom end apart? ie: remove all pulleys, somehow extract damaged oil ring & insert new oil ring?!? :?

It sounds like your front main seal. Yes, i believe it can be replaced from the front after removing the harmonic balancer and cam belt pully.

yep, take the pulleys off, drill thru the old seal (be carefull, try not to hit the stuff on the other side) and put a hook in to pull the old seal out then just put the new one in.

Great, I've only just got it back together and was not looking forward to pulling it apart again. :D

Drilling into it sounds a bit risky. Do ya reckon it'll cost much to get a machanic to do it?

Its a bit time consuming, because the front cover has to come off. Drilling into the seal is one way, you can also pry them out with a small strong wire usually, but be careful of the surrounding metal. When you put the new seal in, make sure it has a thin coating of oil on the lip that seals with the crankshaft, otherwise the first time you start the engine, you'll bugger the seal, and then you'll have to replace it again. Its not a hard job, have a go :).
