Performance of std Intercooler

Performance of std Intercooler
Was wondering what everyone thought of the performance of the std JD style intercooler. If I opened up the piping diameter a little more, is the core big enough for a good performance motor? I was thinking it might be slightly too thin of an intercooler. What have people found?

Let me just say I work in the industry a have tested many items over the years. A lot of Chinese Intercoolers suffer considerable airflow restrictions. Whilst they may look great and have bling I have found anything up to .3+ bar of boost drop from the inlet side to the outlet side. Thats a hell of a lot to sacrifice and works your turbo all that much harder, also effects drivability and spool up.
A standard Evo 7 - 9 intercooler drops around .1 bar.
The set up on the rallycar runs 1.2 bar of boost all day, the air temp out of the turbo is about 140/150+ deg C. drops .1 bar of boost across the intercooler and enters the engine at about 40 to 50 deg C depending on the terrain and our speed. No water sprays are used and the intercooler lays flat in the original JB position.
Be cautious what you buy if you want more that show. Bar and Plate design is still one of the best.

Yeah they are tube and thin.
As for the Chinese knock offs, My mate who does all the custom fab work said is is roughly a 1 in 10 chance of getting a decent quality chinese cooler. If I am to get one of them, I need to make sure it has a replacement warranty if it is a dodgy quality. He has seen a HEAP of bad stuff with them, including welding rods sticking through the intakes and leaking really badly.
I was considering it as well, but would rather pay the extra $$ to make sure it is a good quality one.

As far as I know Mitsubishi have always made their I/Cs tube and fin, from Starion to Evo 10.
The later model unit off memory is 60% + bigger in volume over the standard JB unit and is about as big as you can go to mount in the original position.

Just food for thought, ford now supply bar & plate units as std & factory replacements on xr6t's. As they perform better.

I believe Ford have done it for reliability/warranty... Bar & plate is stronger & less fragile to Stone damage/failure... Have a look at F1 intercoolers or Indy Cars.... all Delta design.....

Wow I can't believe I never saw this before now. I always thought that this was a better option for the starion because it is shorter piping but the airflow results aren't the most desirable.
All in all a very interesting read.
If the outlet is below this inlet, this is the worst combination I can think of. Step causes reversion, smaller diameter speeds air flow & increasers syphoning !
