Balance shafts removal.

Post by T-man »

Hi all just a quick question, am doing a twin cam convertion and starting to put the engine back together and thought about taken out both balance shafts using a balance shaft eliminator kit. My question is how much vibration will I feel if any? Is it noticeable? Does the pros out weigh the cons?

Thanks in advance,
T-man. [/list]

Make sure you block off the oil feed to the BS.
Have you had ALL the rotating assembly balanced???

^^^^^ no, how essential is it that I get the bottom end balanced? The car will be used and abused she's not going to be a track star.

Cheers,

I would think that a balanced RA would have less vibration.

It feels terrible on a street car, track car you probably wouldn't give a shit, but you won't gain any extra power by removing them, the only effect it has is like lightening a flywheel. You only really need to remove them if your are planning on exceeding 8k
Fibreglass airdams $370, fibreglass front bumpers $260, reco drag links $165, alloy radiators $925 (unpolished), h/l switch rebuilds $125, all plus freight.

Thanks guy for all the responces! Hey redzone long time no hear, don't worry I haven't forgot about you or the parts requested. I'm starting to screw the engine back together now. Ok if I keep the engine balance shafts I won't need to balance the bottom end, but if I remove them then I will need to balance the bottom end. Also there is no performance gain if I remove the shafts only if I go to 8k rpm?

Remember the shafts spin at twice the crank speed

Balance shafts are there to dampen the harmonics created by a 4 cylinder engine, they are not there to balance the rotating assembly of the engine. Please don't confuse these points.

If you are going to rev it to 8k then I would suggest the engine be balanced properly with or without balance shafts.

Ok ok, here's my new plan. Remove the balance shafts and get the bottom end balanced!
