Wiring for dummies?

Post by FST4RD »

Right so Im quite a way through absolutely stripping the interior of my Starion. Im starting to do the wiring whilst Im at it. Few questions...
There seem to be 4 pieces of loom heading towards the back of the car, a big one on the drivers outside foot well that splits under the seat, 2 down the passengers outside footwell with one being smaller then the other, and one that comes from the center of the car and then down into the middle passenger footwell and heads under the seat.

This car is going to be a track car, has manual mirrors, going to move the electric window controls to the dash, and obviously want to retain all rear lights and fuel pump.

What wires can be removed? Im assuming I don't need all 4 loom pieces heading to the back of the car?

Also I removed the center console and all the metal bits and just under the dash slightly to the right of where the center console was a little metal box with 2 blue wires came out, still wired in. What is this? Do I still need it?

It's an interesting job doing that hey- I've just been doing the same, stripped the whole interior, dashboard, and center console, etc out, and have just put in a basic aluminium dashboard.

I'm using an aftermarket computer so am actually removing ALL the engine loom wiring.

Unfortunately your tail lights etc are in some of those wires to the rear, so a lot of those wires are still needed (unless your doing a dirt/stock car needing no lights).

I'll have a look at mine tonight cos I've kind of extracted the whole loom and am seperating bits out (or just cutting bits off) that I don't need. Off the top of my head not exactly sure what the round metal one you're talking about is, although I know I've seen it on mine - just can't remember what it does. I did figure it out a few weeks ago by just holding it in my hand, and turning things on and off until I felt it click in my hand.

Get a wiring diagram Robin, ive just done most of my loom and managed to cut a heap out of it. With the diagram it makes it easy, a multimeter helps alot as well

Your car had the ETACS box on the passenger side, but also coming into the centre is the window switches, handbrake warning connector and centre console lighting if I'm not mistaken.

Mostly that will be pretty obvious based on where you see them running. Example, if you are removing the rear demister and wiper you can chop the wires you see running internally over the rear wheel arch, you can remove the sprayer wire that runs up the drivers B pillar, the door switches for the interior light, and so on.
The passenger side one contains wiring for the fuel pump.

Get rid of it, it's your speed chime for the digi dash model

Hope that helps Robin.

That bloody ding-dong... I accidentally plugged mine back in, and because I have the smaller tyres, the speedo says 107 when I'm actually doing 100. Made for a frustrating drive out to Rangiora the other day, hah.
