what happens when the balance shaft belt is cut off....asking because it was not there in my old motor...
whats the effects....
just trying to figure out why this would have been done...

Well i recently did this so here are the steps I took:
things to get before you start:
-get a new oil pump gasket and maybe new cambelt if your feel like replacing it
-a 8x1,25 tap, you'll need it to tap some threads later
-8x1,25 40 mm bolt
-a tube of liquid gasket
So what do you need to do :
-tap your cooland and oil
-remove radiator
-remove belts, the 2 wheels(dunno what their called in english) and the cambelt cover
-align marks for the cam belt(makes putting it back together easier later)
-take of the cam belt, tentioner and springs
-take of the oil cooler lines and the oil line to the turbo(it's behind the oil pump where the oil cooler lines are hooked up)
-take off the oil pan
-now that the pan is off stick something in between the crankshaft to block it and take of the cam belt sprocket of the crank
-block the lower balance shaft and remove the oil pump sprocket
-there is a plug next to the oip pump sprocket, remove and remove the bolt that it's covering
-take out all those 12 mm bolts and get the oilpump assembly out.
-take the lower balance shaft out
-tap more treads in the balance shaft so you can put the longer bolt in later to blok the oil passage that is in the shaft.
-cut off the shaft just behind the smooth surface.
-put the small piece back in the oil pump and use the longer bolt. Check that the oil passage is blocked by the longer bolt
-clean the gasket surfaces and reassemble in reverse order
-use liquid gasket to seal the oil pan.
Ofcourse you won't be needing the balance shaft belt anymore just leave it out and either put a bolt in the balanceshaft tensioner hole or just leave the tensioner in place.
You could completly remove the top balance shaft, but that would require turning the balance shaft bearings to block of the oil passages and you'd need to block the hole left by the balance shaft (I've seen people use a frost plug)
