original ingition setup, questions

Post by boosted »

Hello,

I currently have some difficulties with a JB starion (intercooled model) and the original ignition setup.

I would like to ask if someone really knows how it works?

-how does the vac advance work, does it just retard the ignition with boost, or does it also have affect with vacoum?

When setting up the ign. timming, (8° before tdc) should this be done with or without the pipe conected?

-Knock sensor and ignition module, anyone understand how it works?

I really would like to know how exactly everything works..

Many thanks in advance..

Hi boosted , well buy now the vacume advance does not work !!! as the
bladder in the dizzy leaks after the car is about 3-5 yrs old , the timing
at 8 btdc, ive found that it runs better at 10 btdc and you should block off the vacume hose on bottom of dizzy !!!!!! :D
as for the knock sensor detects detonaton and sends a signal to the ignition modual to retard or advance the spark to correct the detonaton problem :D
well i think thats how it works and ive studyed starions for the last 16yrs and owned 3 :D :beer

suck on the end of the vacuum advance hose and see if the dizzy advances. that will tell you if your vac advance is still working.
timing should be done without vacuum advance on.
vacuum advance advances timing with vacuum and retards it with boost.
knock sensor, this retards timing when knock is detected.

Thanks for the quick answers!!!

But blocking off the vacum pipe, wouldn`t that elimnate a quite important safety "device", like properly retarding when boost comes in?

yes it would, and not all of them leak, i ran 13.06 second quarter mile times with the stock ignition system which worked fine..

ok, so best is to check if the vacuum unit still works, then setting up idle-timing with vac. pipe off.. ?
