Hesitating, missing etc.....

Post by bigd »

Hi guys,

Well I have cleaned and sealed fuel tank, replaced all filters before the fuel pump, replaced pump with a walbro unit and I am still getting the same problems as before.

At idle I get an occasional miss and when at low revs just driving a long the car can jerk and hesitate. Sometimes it jerks along and gives you a wedgie. Never runs totally smooth and feels like it is down on power. When it gets higher up in the rev range and at wide open throttle it runs sweet as and hits proper boost and holds it etc....
I assume this means it is not fuel related.
Anyone have any idea what I should look at next.
I have previously replaced plugs and leads (although the leads were cheap) and dizzy cap. I also replaced the fuel filter in the engine bay but that was a year ago and it could well have filled up with more crap going by what was in the tank! I replaced all vacuum hoses too at the same time.
It's a 2 litre, only done low k's so has to be something simple.
Does anyone have any idea? I was meant to have it sorted for our wedding which is in less than 2 weeks!
Cheers in advance!

It could be injector related. Check all connection points around that area....or the injector(s) may not be spraying properly at low revs. The fuel is delivered at a fair quantity when the throttle is open, so it gets used up! Were they cleaned and flow tested at any stage?

This scenario was similar on my old JB that recently sold to Sonic. Crappy tank, injector(s) and injector clips not soldered on properly...

Thanks Brendan,

Never had the injectors cleaned or tested. Can I do anything to check them myself? Will check all connections etc..

Any more ideas greatly appreciated!

Cheers

I would check the leads and plugs, does sound like a lead problem.

Does it get much use? I use iridium spark plugs which I reckon clean up faster and better after been fouled by starting the car a few times without driving it to operating temp or from rich running cars.
Also fuel set i think its called for the tank, great for cars that don't get everyday use or duel fuel cars that hardly get petrol use.

Nearly all the injectors I've come across that are not working correctly because of race gas (from Japan) or shit in the fuel tank can be cleaned overnight in a jar of injector cleaner.

Congrats on the upcoming wedding btw hope you get it sorted in time, we will need pics though

Woa there. Assumptions are the mother of all F%^k ups. Check your fuel pressure regulator. Try crimping the return line slowly at idle till the revs rise a little then take it for a run. I had similar problems and it turned out to be a dicky regulator.

Ok update - Took out the injectors, soaked them in carb cleaner, cleaned the connectors - little bit of crc, put everything back together and it runs perfect again. Will take it for a good drive today and see how it goes.

Thanks for all the advice guys. Will put up a starion related wedding photo if I get a good one!
