Bang for buck mods
well here's my two cents worth....
i would definitely start with cutting open the airbox. i only cut away the section that faced into the wheel arch to try and stop sucking in two much hot air. i found that the difference in throttle response was amazing. it was as if the car was strangled before.... maybe not a huge power gain, but it definitely made it a lot more fun to drive :D
after that it might be time to look at exhaust and boost increases.. if it is intercooled. but first up start with a thorough check of everything on the engine. any new power gains will quickly show up faults..
good luck, and enjoy

Re: ...
Bump.
Bosch Super 4s: I'm REALLY pissed off about my decision to get these (no disrespect NachoMan) but even though the car's been serviced, tuned, new timing belt and associated bits, new oil seals and lots of other stuff, the car is running rich as all f**k, blowing A LOT of white smoke and I'm going through about 20 litres of unleaded per 100 ks
. I'll probably grab some NGKs and wack them in as I never had a problem with them. Anyone want some Super 4s with about 1000 km on them? Or have I missed something obvious? (the car is running quite fine btw, except for the unburnt fuel stench and smoke cloud everytime I stop....grrr).
Brakes: got a pair of new rear discs and got Lucas pads all round (I was told to go for Lucas over Bendix - did I take the right or wrong advice?). The thing stops on a dime now, from the limited country and faster stop/start driving I've done, I'd definitely recommend them. Grips so well on the front that I can feel a solid 'clunk' and very small forward movement from the front when I stop. I suspect something will need tightening or replacing up there at some point :x !
So, when the front discs go, are there any slotted ones that fit straight on that you guys recommend? I don't plan on this car ever getting stupidly powerful (it is a JD ;) ), but I figure if the cost difference is minimal, I'd like to get some.
Next - 2.5" mild steel exhaust with high flow cat. Been quoted around $900 by a few places. Quote of $1100 for 3" straight through. Given the car will be used for city driving, is the extra $200 worth it? Most things I've read 2.5" is the way to go. Opinions?
Cheers,

K&N Filter - works well, but I've noticed no real difference. And I have a brand new paper filter from when I got the car serviced too. I also picked up pod filter, but until I figure out a way of getting rid of the air flow sensor (which I disconnected but the car hiccuped like it had been on the piss) I'm stuck with the original can. I'd love to grind holes in it :D but they're different on the JD and I don't know how easy they are to find.NachoMan wrote:The K&N filters are horrendously expensive, but they are very very good.
But the one that i would recommend above all others would be the Bosch Super 4. They are fantastic, and no comparison to anything else.
Brakes! It's all very well to go fast, but if you like to push it, then get some decent pads. Starion ones are becoming hard to find, but luckily one type of Toyota Hilux pad goes in without any mods. It's thicker, and a fraction bigger, but also gives better stopping power.

ok to clear one thing up about the exhaust YOU WILL NEVER LOOSE BOTTOM END POWER WITH A LARGER EXHAUST ON A TURBO CAR.
its true for n/a cars to have a tuned length exhaust, but on a turbo car because of that massive great big restriction we call an exhaust turbine it no longer applies.
so always go 3" over 2.5", you can also get away with allot less muffling on a turbo car, even cookies car with 1 resonator on it (that was all wasnt it?) is pretty quiet for an open exaust.

I am sure mine boosts higher than that, roughly about 10 psi stock...SpidersWeb wrote:
Use a basic Turbosmart or similar boost controller to raise boost a few psi. Cut is approximately at 12psi. Factory they are roughly 8psi.

correct me if im wrong but 7-8psi of boost should be the standard stock boost level regardless of the turbo, as far as im aware the aus delivered and jap delivered cars (JA, B and D) all ran 7-8 pounds of boost?
Sounds like some sort of overboosting there?
