On my EVO6 TME I run 1.5 bar all the time no problem with stock bottom end. I have also run 1.8 bar (for 3 laps until I noticed it) at Oran Park when my boost controller lost the plot, however this is pushing your luck :D
I know the VR4 pistons are not as strong as the later cars. Depends what you are doing I guess.

would ambient temperature also make a difference to the max PSI you can run without seeing knock?

so then someone in nz might easily be able to run 22psi through their motor without any problems, while someone in queensland with the same exact turbo may start to see problems above 18psi.. right?
same thing during winter/summer.. we should be able to run more boost in winter than in summer..
