The front thermostat outlet should work fine, but you need to attend to the coolant port sizes where the block meets the head. A restrictor or two should be used to promote coolant flow to the back of the block. Having the coolant enter at the front and then proceed directly out will cause cooling issues and hot-spots at the rear of head. Restricting the front coolant passages and maybe opening up the rear would promote flow over the whole engine.
