Water Pump Woes
Water Pump Woes
well i started my conversion today. step one change the water pumps. but i have a problem the water pump off my l200 sohc doesnt fit the dohc. i went to cheapa auto and had a look at a starion pump, and it was the same as my l200 pump. they had a few parts listed but only had one instock.
in the pic below the 2 bolts on the far left are the ones that dont match, every other bolt lines up.
doest anyone have the part number i need????

I went back to the parts shop and checked out every mitsubishi water pump that looked like it was close, only to find none were what i was after. From here i have 2 options. 1) use the dohc pump and make a pipe that goes from the rear facing hole 90 degrees back in the direction that the starion pump goes OR modify the starion pump like such
i had read that there was some customising needed to the waterpump, i didnt realise 2 of the holes needed to be redrilled. filling in the cavity doesnt seem necessary as there is a sealing edge inside of it, i just figure it will put a bit of meat around the new holes.
thoughts?

Are you sure the dohc water pump you have is from a 4g63 engine? The reason I ask is that the photo look exactly like the pumps I have and the bolt holes align perfectly. You may have a 4g61 pump, which has a slightly different bolt pattern to the 4g63 and hence why the 1.6 pumps looks like they will fit. If you still have access to the block you got the dohc pump I suggest you measure the diameter of the bores.
Below is a series of photos showing an unmodified rwd 4g63, a modified rwd 4g63 and a fwd 4g63 pump. On the modified pump I've pressed of the pulley flange and pressed it back on inverted to achieve correctly alignment.
Edit 1: I see you are using an RVR engine and I'm not sure if the 6-bolt block water pump is the same as the 7-bolt block and hence the rwd pumps might not fit :( .
Edit 2: Looking up the Mitsubishi replacement water pump part numbers for the VR4 (6 bolt block) and the RVR (N23W 6 bolt and 7 bolt blocks) the numbers are the same until 1992/09/1 when the RVR number changes which I think corresponds to the switch from 6-bolt to 7-bolt blocks. I also looked up the Evo3 number and it is the same as the 7-bolt RVR.
