Select a sump

Post by Lunacy »

Well im looking for a new sump for my new engine and am wondering if anyone knows if early vr4 4g63 sumps fit in rwd configuration, or if i need a starion or sigma specific one.
Am basically looking to increase sump capacity and reduce the chance of oil starvation under acceleration.
Ive found the modified starion one from beyond the limit for $335AUD
Has 5 litre capacity, and standard baffling.
http://www.beyondthelimit.com.au/parts%20sumps.html
Also found this OBX one from the usa which is for a 4g63t eclipse for $240USD.
It has trapdoors and extensive baffling.

Alternatively i could just get a decent starion sump and have someone modify it here in nz.

Any thoughts/ideas/opinions welcome

Ha ha, I just asked the same thing in the "for sale" section. Hopefully someone can answer it for us as I'm after a hi volume sump for my VR4 4G63 too.

I would have thought the bolt pattern on the sump would be the same?

Is it me or is there no turbo return fitting and fitting for the return for the oil/air seperator? It would be something else you would need to factor in the cost.

Drainplug on the OBX look's odd.
3(?)cm higher than the bottom?

A fwd sump is a bit deeper and has more / better baffleing and it appears to fit but you would need to use the fwd oil pickup as well
I've had mine since 03 07 92

I'm using a VR4 sump on my car - I had to make it marginally shallower so that it sat just above the front cross member, which was a pretty straight-forward modification.

Beyond the limit wont make you a sump - unless you can get an order for 5 or more. I hassled him for ages, but it seems it's just not worth it for him.

I have no idea what the OBX ones are like - but if anyone has one, I'd like to hear from you.

Performance wise, I've never had an issue with the VR4 sump - mine is used on an Improved Production race car and I've never had any surge. So I think they're pretty good.

As I said, my VR4 sump is slightly modified, but I doubt it would make more than 150-200mls of difference - and the capacity is around 4.5 litres.
