OK, given I can be somewhat 'electrically challenged' and wouldnt know an ohm from a volt - a question.
The Starion loom to the alternator has a thick lead and a small wire plus 2 other wires as well to. The VR4 alternator has a plug with a 3 wires into it plus a thick wire separate from that.
Clues/info on getting this right when adapting the VR4 plug to the starion wiring. Am I right in thinking the 3 wires run to the plug and the thick one the connector pole/pin on theVR4 alternator? and which ones connect where?
Thanks for any help :)

Never argue with an idiot, it brings you down to their level and they beat you with experience.
I believe the extra wire on the VR4 one is for a "charge light".
Best bet is to talk to an auto electrician and get the pin/wiring diagram for both alternators.
I have an alternator that is supposed to be for a hyundai and I had to wire in a resistor to simulate the "charge light".

It's often known as an "excitor" wire in the autoelec game. You can use a small globe of a few watts (it generates the resistance Tomsun was talking about).

ok guys so i took some photos today and this is what we have!
Starion Engine Bay:

VR4 Alternator:

so it looks to me like it will be a pretty straight forward swap.
so does it matter which way to 2 wires together go into the plug?
i was wondering what the extra wire by itself was for but then remembered that its the oil pressure sender wire.

SR20 powered starion what have I done..... :P
It will matter, yes.
From memory, the wire carrying 12v will need to go into the top terminal (it's like a "T" with the 2 terminals, yeah?), the other wire is the negative (earth) - both will lead into your cluster in the cabin.
If you get it wrong, it simply wont work (no charge to your battery), you wont do any damage, so just swap them over.
