Sydney: Track Day - Wed 14th Dec.
Well, only three of us showed up, Cookie, Allan and myself.
We all reckon we had a good day :D
Cookie had an intercooler pipe to the TB blow off, which was duly flaired/rectified and went on to post a best time of 1min11sec. Damm quick I'd say.
Allan had no dramas and successfully saw off an Integra, which is pretty good for an 200km+ EA XR6.
I had the turbo oil return hose come off in the 1st session after about 5 laps (big cloud of blue smoke and a very oily engine bay). Before this happened, the staz felt strong, much better than my last visit. It easily reeled in a WRX and an M3, which pleased me no end. A trip to town to the local Pirtek shop for new hose and clamps etc, pulled the turbo off and re-fitted all the bits and put a bit of oil in it.
1:00pm, out again, but wait, the power steering feels funny. Checked and the PS belt is shredded. Some movement in the pump, will check it out later, cut the belt and out again, sans PS.
Staz feels good, having fun with a 350Z, big cloud of blue smoke again :x
This was the oil drain back hose from the original oil/air seperator (not used) popping out its sealing bolt. Looks like I definately have some breathing issues.
A tip for all, dont use silicon hose where hot oil is involved, as when it gets hot it softens enough such that the clamps cant hold it.
Live and learn (I had been warned about this but chose to ignore it!).

No pics. :(
My wife had the camera.
Was a great day though. Sunny but a fairly cool breeze so it wasn't boiling hot. I was running around mainly with a couple of Holden HQ race cars and a Brute Ute.
Geez those HQ's have no brakes at all. I almost went up the back of one.
There was also an EVO 6 out there that was matching my times. Damn 4 wheel drive and all it's techno gizmo's.
Merlin's twin cam looks promising. It certainly had some balls down the straight. Once he sorts out the crankcase pressure problems and starts doing some work in the handling department it will be an impressive beast. A 3.9 diff wouldn't go astray either.
I managed a 1:11.50 which is 1 second quicker than my previous best. I still need to fiddle with the brake bias a bit. The car has a touch of understeer on corner entry but can easily be induced into oversteer with a bit of throttle. Some tweaking of the shock settings should settle this down nicely. It's a lot better than before when the car had gobs of oversteer all over the show. The new shocks/bushes/ball joints have done wonders.
With a bit of tweaking and a fresh set of R compounf tyres a lap time in the 1:10's should be achievable. The ported head sitting on my workbench should help nicely too.
The development continues...

how much are ADVAN A048's?
the Michelin Pilot Sport would probably be a better tyre for my usage, rather than a pure track tyre. Has anyone used them, comments?

Sure does. I was saying Merlin on the day.. "I've been told to go home happy, so after I did my quickest lap I went home. No point in going home miserable if you can help it.. you might not want to come back."JJH wrote:1 second is a great leap forward Cookie; makes the drive home much more enjoyable when all the hard work pays off :)
