hook up a fuel pressure gauge if you can - your pressure regulator may have carked it and is forcing too much fuel through the injectors. If this is the case and you let it continue, you'll be in for a fuel pump replacement soon. This seems to be a major part of the issue. I took it along to anothe...

I'd have thought so too, but it's remarkably normal.

Have you checked for fuel leaks from the fuel pump to the engine bay. Can you smell any fuel? There's no sign of anything leaking from the engine at all. The fuel, like the oil it burns, comes out the rear. If it sits idling, a patch of fuel starts to accumulate on the ground from spray out the bac...

Where in Melb are you? I think I have an injector top somewhere, take it, swap it over and see if it changes anything. If it's still running ok it may be a temperature sensor messing it up, thinking the ngine is always cold when it's warm. It idles normally, at higher revs when cold, so that aspect...

Thanks a lot for the offers!

ProZac, I'd happily take you up on it if you were in Melbourne, but I'm not sure it's worth it as you're in NZ. ... Or at all, given the amount of smoke it blows. There are clearly other costly issues lurking in its future.

P.S. Hundreds is closer to the mark, your mechanic doesn't want to fix it, they are a pain in the arse but many on here have fixed theirs themselves... They not only don't want to fix it, they won't do it. They'd send it away to be fixed and charge whatever that comes to. Their only other economic ...

Thanks. Mechanic says the throttle body/injectors/etc have had it and it would cost thousands to fix.

I'm sure they checked the air filter and I'd guess that would get progressively worse, rather than happen really rapidly.

Is there any easy way to test leaking injectors/injector seals?

Huge fuel consumption problem

My JA is now consuming well over twice as much fuel as it used to. It amazes me is that it's still running fine. In my experience, vast changes in fuel economy are usually accompanied by other changes in the way an engine performs but there are no obvious changes in power or anything. It just uses a...

Well, they discovered the big problem quickly this time: A (now-massive) split on the underneath of the turbo end of the hose from the air filter to the turbo. Taping it up fixed it. (... for now.)

So, then comes the hard part. Is there any way to obtain one of those hoses in Australia?

What has the mechanic done??

My JA's been running fine for years. Idled a little roughly at times, but drove perfectly, except for sometimes a major hesitation at certain speeds under heavy acceleration. I asked my usual place to tune it and see if they could find out what the hesitation problem was. They replaced the fuel filt...

I may have seen it in Bayswater too.

("maybe" because I saw one of that description about a week ago, but side-on, so I didn't see its plates)

The ausrotary thread is interesting, but look at the maybes all over the place and the lack of proper analysis. After all, if a fuel pump lasts a little less long and you're saving $'00s a year on fuel, it might still be worth it. Or it might not. It would be nice if there were some reliable researc...
