the crank angle on the dash is referenced from the distributor, the side of the disk with 360 slots in it. good to hear you got your car sorted

I still have a suspicion that it's the EFI relay. Try temporarily bypassing it by unplugging the relay and wiring the fuel pump and ECU to a switched 12v source. You said when it cranks it fires and then dies, How sudden does it die? Immediatly after you move the key from START or slowly splutterin...

dash knock sensor is on the side of the engine block, dash ecu takes care of ignition timing issues related to the det sensor. Stock cords and stazs use a ignition moduel mounted on fire wall. Haynes manuals with dash info, is there such a thing. info on dash engines not easy to come by.

The module in the dash distributor is a j913 wich is also used in the first lot of v6 pajeros bought into australia. The v6s that have distributors, the distributor and disc are different but module the same.
