Win XP Pro comes with advance network setup enabled. This usually requires you to setup a domain, user groups etc. Have you set your computer to simple network setup. There's an option for this. Right-Click on a folder, goto sharing tab. If advanced is enabled there should be a link. But not always ...

XP Pro is a bastard to setup simple network connections.
You said XP Pro on both machines and one machine has external
dialup modem.
Use Network Setup Wizard under Network Connections.
Very handy and has solved any network problem I couldn't
fix manually.
